Isn't she a beast!!! :)

Devil to handle though...Reminds me of the fat lass down the chip shop during an evening cod rush.

Well I found the data interesting, tech stuff always is, even if this particular loco isn't.

b101uk... I like the way that all the dissenters in the other place all say that you must be wrong because the Big Boy 'feels right'!

I didn't realise there were that many UP ex-Big Boy engineers hanging out in that forum. Having never driven a train in my whole life (although my daughter got to run around a steam engine when she was 10... GGRRRRRR) I rely on people like you (and the original .eng writer) to point out little inaccuracies like this and help to get them right.

I am particularly amazed that younger English contributors have poo-pooed your suggestion out of hand too. I'd love to know where they went for their Big Boy driving lessons. ;)

b101uk..You've twigged it they have doubled up, they even got rid of water level spec cos I reckon boiler was so long they were having trouble with the water levels going down banks reading what the files say it looks as if it's got 8 cylinders instead of 4. I put 3000ton load on this thing and it went over S&C at nearly 80mph no way.....................Rick

So who's going to offer a 'fixed and realistic' Big Boy eng file to Train-sim.com then? Need someone with a very thick skin...any T1000 Terminators around here?

hi
hear are the eng files i have so far--only the BIG stand out errors have been fixed.

http://www.btinternet.com/~marktod/BigB ... fix_01.zip

still got to look for the smaller errors when i can find the data.

list of fixes:

mass
Adheasion
DerailRailForce
1st and 2nd NumWheels
MaxPower
MaxForce
MaxVelocity
NumCylinders

now only dose 80mph max on the flat.

performs on hills almost corectly(not sanding) (to within 2mph) for traling mass (above 16mph speeds it is 1-2mph fast at less than 16mph it is 1-2mph slow).

corected the rear driver set(AI) sliping b4 the player driver set and the power loss that came with it.

wot do ypu guys think about them i have put "comments" in the eng files to show y i have changed wot i have

hi and thanks

i like Diesel tranes my self, b4 now i had never moded a steem eng file so i will have to read up a bit later about the steem parts of the eng file.

would the cylinder volume be the same just 1/2 the amout of them(2 insted of 4)? or is it the total volume of all the cylinders on the loco?

will read Eng_and_wag_file_reference_guide.doc later

b101uk...That's it Matey all you have to remember is, 1 boiler feeding 2 engines........so you got it right, spot on, halve all the spec that needs to be halved...I've altered so much on this since I got my hands on it, took
me best part of 4 hours, it's a Cracking Model I got piston gland blow
on it, safety valves that blow, black smoke just as it should have..........................Keep at It.................Rick

This is not posted to start a heated argument, but.
Tried modified files entering Cutbank from west, passing 30mph limit@30mph,projected mph 28,with the standard BB consist.Train stalled at level crossing next to radio mast.
Tried original files, same conditions, long haul, but minimum speed 17mph through Cutbank.
Tried modded files again, speed etc.Same result within a few metres, stalled.
Back to originals passed through Cutbank OK.
Make of this what you will, don't shoot the messenger!

hi bjdick
the CONSIST BigBoy_LongWest31.con is errr to BIG its just another example of NALW maths?.

BigBoy_LongWest31.con is 4510.885T (1000kg T) + loco mass + tender mass, that comes to 5054.441T, the bigboy was made to hall 3600T less loco mass, less tender mass witch comes to 3056T trailing load.

the same load as BigBoy_LongWest31.con but with 2 defualt dash9 on the frunt will only manage 14mph into Cutbank from west.

2 dash9 have 8800HP, a loco mass of 381T of witch 381T are on drivers witch is 136T more mass on drivers than the bigboy.

the grade test i cared out were with the moded eng files were on 1.832% and 2.879% grades over 3km to the point ware the balance speed was reached, there is still an error in the files of +-2mph for the grades, witch i will work out.

thanks for the input

Big Boy

Post by supergoods »

Rick, that was an interesting comment about water levels as I melted the plugs twice on this beast when the gauge dropped out suddenly on relativly level track.

I did not see safety valves lifting and was up to 360 psi, maybe I lost the water by bursting the boiler and melting the plugs was MS speak for this.

BigBoy Problems

Post by geoffhocking »

Anybody having problems with the BigBoy?
I downloaded and installed it, created a simple activity for the M Pass route. When it loaded up in MSTS, I got to the cab view and my system locked up, requiring a re-boot. This happens every time I try it. MSTS working fine otherwise. Are there any specfic settings required in MSTS for BigBoy to run?
