I seem to be having a problem with these two locos mentioned in the Subject field.
I can use any other loco on the same three passenger cars, and they all work fine, but when I try to use either of these two Class 20s, then try to run the activity I set them in, then when I click on the activity name itself after choosing the route (usually FUDE v1.2) then the pointer freezes totally.
I re-downloaded these two locos, and installed them into the Trainset folder, with no modifications to the .eng file at all (i.e. no coupler strength changes etc.) but still I can't use these two locos for whatever reason.
Does anyone else know if they've had troubles with these two particular models ? Would love to hear from you if you know anything. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I've just been testing the 20104 loco in Explore Mode, and it works fine like this, with the 3 BR cars, but use it in ANY activity on ANY route and it crashes every time. There must be a reason for this behavior, and I'd love to hear from anyone who has an answer. Cheers.

I just did this before adding to my original message, and it worked fine like that. But tried the NWE route, using this consist as the Player Service, and it crashed instantly when I chose the activity. Other engines, apart from the 20010 also, seem to be fine in activities. So it seems like the activity itself is not the problem, but I'll just be on the safe side and create another short and simple activity using the FBL Line route for a difference and see what happens. Here's hoping you might be rightphill70 wrote:Try running them in explore mode, if they are ok, it would suggest a problem with the activity.

Further Edit: I tried the above suggestion regarding the FBL Line and the consist in question... Still failed miserably here. I changed the RF 20104 for the blue 20008 and it went perfectly well in this activity.
So, it all points to something being wrong with the locomotive's .eng file maybe. But if the 20104 works fine in explore mode, WHY won't it work in any activity ? There has to be a logical reason for this, and somebody has the answer somewhere !

Hi Jim,
Dont know if this is any help to you. Ive just downloaded and installed both these locos and tried them in an activity on the MidEast route as the player had 2xClass 20's and they worked fine. The rest of the consist were BR HAA Hopper Wagons so maybe its the coaches your using.
I did note that neither of the locos come with a cab or sound folder and are aliased to the UltWhistler Sounds. Have you got these in your common.sound folder. Also they need to have the class20 cabview folder in the loco folder as in the engine files its got:
Cabview ( class20.cvf )
Dont know if this could cause your problem but maybe you just need to edit the engine files for the cabview and sound.
Hope this helps,
Terry W.

I did a bit of investigating a short while ago tonight, and came across something in the .eng file of both these locos (20010 & 20104) (both RF livery).
This related to the fact that the cab sound file pointer line near the bottom of this .eng file, before the text relating to operating procedures etc, (all sound is, incidentally, aliased to the UltWhistler common.sound file, as well as the cabview, to the Class20C.cvf file)
The problem seemed to be simply that the cab sound file had an extra bracket ( ')' ) at the end of it, so that there were two brackets instead of one, and MSTS, on trying to load this activity for the FUDE v1.2 Airport Local Run, which I customised to some degree, found this error in the cab sound pointer line, and simply crashed (or froze) without displaying any reason for it.
I'm positive of this being the source of the trouble, because the two locos (20010 & 20104) both work fine in any activity I set them for the player locos. Absolutely no problems at all now. Thanks for the help offered, but I was definitely stumped at first, although I had a sneaking suspicion it had to be the .eng file in some way, and not the activity itself, as someone suggested in a reply from the Train-Sim.com site forum. Someone else said that if you remove the operating procedures notes at the bottom of the .eng file, the loco won't work in Explore Mode, but it was all there, and even so, I can't see how removing this section would prevent it working in Explore Mode ? What do you think ? Thanks again.

Hi Jim
What he actually posted was that without the operating procedures the engine will work in explore mode, but not in an activity.
By having the extra bracket it becomes a finishing statement and the following sections are ignored by the sim.
If the extra bracket had been on the eng sounds line at the beginning of the file the sim would have crashed on explore too.
Cheers

Hi Jim,
Ive just looked at the original engine files and theres no extra bracket in the cab sound line on either loco and I only edited the Cabview line to: ( "..\\..\\common.cab\\Class_20\\class20.cvf" ) and both worked okay. Somehow we must have different versions of the locos engine files.
In regards to what happens if any text/brackets etc is actually removed from an engine file I havent a clue. I tend to leave well alone unless I know exactly what Im doing or its in a readme as adjustments.
Glad your sorted anyway,
Terry W.
