Activity Editor freezing even after reloading

Post by jetgriff »

never runs smooth does it?

the activity editor keeps freezing mainly when zooming in or out or grab and shift the route along.. mostly after addind a consist, but sometimes when editing the route as well
I have uninstalled and reinstalled MSTS still happens so think it may be my new computer playing up?

Change your display settings to 16 bit, then try it.

Hi
Did you fix your graphics problem?

from a previous thread

------------------------------------------------------

its a Nvidia Riva TNT2 model 64
windows 2000 pro
have the latest directx

when i dowloaded a driver from Nvidia it would not load because it could not find device..

----------------------------------------------------

Also if you have station names, siding names, signals etc switched on it drags AE down.

Cheers
Jon

the computer recons the video card is there but the update cannot find it? There is only one VGA port at the back, should there not be 2 if you add a card?

Well if the computer was built with an on board graphics card....then yes...you will need to switch it off in the BIOS....then add the card.

Use the original drivers that came with your card.
Don't try and upgrade Nvidia drivers for use with MSTS!

Hi Terry

I can't agree more with your advice

I never updated my drivers with Nvidia and have never had a problem with MSTS albeit with the usual stuttering on the highly detailed Routes.

I am just about to change my existing video card from a Nvidia FX 5600 XT 128MB to a ATI Radeon Saphire 9600XT 256MB with the installed drivers and I will not be updating the drivers.

Regards

Same here, Nvidia GeForce FX5600XT 256Mb card running with the latest drivers, no problems encountered with MSTS or indeed any other software.
To suggest not to update graphic drivers, I am sorry, is simply not sound advice. Nvidia or otherwise.

which brings me to this question.....if you msts and everything else is working fine with old drivers, do you risk updating them for maybe better performance, or do you just leave them as they are???

Well, if you don`t update you`ll never find out. :D
Flippancy aside, I would definitely recommend looking on the manufacturers site to see what the actual benefits of updating will be.
In my own case I needed the update to drive other recent games other than MSTS. Many overlook the need to create individual graphic profiles for the graphics card to handle the different games. Therein lies the real benefit.

Hi Jim
I appreciate Ray posts that he runs fine with the latest drivers...however you'll find the forums covered in threads by posters who cannot, and have had to roll them back...whats the difference...I don't know.
Its a similar story with consists, Ray posts his msts runs fine with nearly 1300...again there's lots of posts with a different story.
If you don't need to update drivers for other software,I wouldn't bother for msts....as its certainly been well documented that AE doesn't like being run in 32bit with up to-date graphic cards and drivers.....and the game itself can only run in 16bit colours. I've still got a Nvidia 5200, with 2 year old drivers...and its always worked good for me.
Cheers

We seem to have digressed from our objective, namely to resolve JetGriff problem. Just to reiterate what we already have:

Well I`ve some good news on that front, yes it can, note I say `can` and not `does`, if you are prepared to invest money, time and effort in creating the correct conditions, (PC resources and game options), it does run smooth.

I visited Nvidia support recently, I don`t think there is an available update driver for Windows 2000, TNT series cards. The most recent UDA drivers are the 80 Series. So I am not surprised it could not find your card.
jetgriff wrote:the computer recons the video card is there but the update cannot find it? There is only one VGA port at the back, should there not be 2 if you add a card?
If you add a second graphics card there will be 2 VGA ports.
The only real advantage in having two cards, apart from using two screens, is that they should be matched and interconnected to reap the real benefit.

The Nvidia Riva TNT 64 was a decent card, it will struggle with MSTS.
I would recommend investing in a better graphics card. Which is the best?
Only one criteria, the best you can afford.
Look in the PC press for reviews before buying.

I can only repeat NVidias own advice to me when i got in a pickle after updating drivers a few years back. That advice was never to update drivers from those supplied originally with the card, unless the update is stated to fix a particular problem you are having.

They very kindly sent me a CD of drivers for my card with instructions to put the oldest set on - which i did, and its still running without any problems today several years on :)

Generally speaking the rule is still "if it ain't broke - dont fix it "
