I once saw up in Leeds (on the Leeds to Bradford Transport Interchange link service) a single carriage with a class 43 HST on either end! Apparently the DMU that was supposed to do the service had broken down and this was the best alternative that the operating company could come up with at short notice to avoid a penalty.

Saw something similar a few years ago when I used to commute to Sunderland a lot: A single HST power car with a blue GUV heading North through paltforms 8&9 at Newcastle, presumably on their way to Heaton Depot.

Find me on RMweb - mostly 7mm stuff.

The DEXTREMU at the East Lancs Railway. An electric unit running on non electrified rails by plonking a Class 25 right in the middle of the train and rigging the EMU cab to control it!

And very nicely modelled in the ELR route CD (blatent plug for product I contributed to ;) ;) ).

4VEP+4VEP+33/1+4TC
Used to run Monday to Friday Mornings from Basingstoke to Waterloo.
The 8 VEP was on a Southampton service, and the 33/1+4TC was a Salisbury service, joined up at Basingstoke, used to depart around 07.40 ish.

I guess that in TrainSim world virtually any combo can be tried so keeping things realistic is hard.

With regards to DCR I have yet to see a class 442/444/450 or 458 coupled to anything but another of the same class.

Class 159/170 combos are quite common but I have never seen a 159+170+159 set so keep the 170 at the end of the train.

Surely except 450/444 9-car formations. I've seen them a lot.

Would a 16 or 24 Car 375 count (as an odd formation) i know its only one type of train, since once when there was a lot of snow, where one eight car train broke down during the heavy snow fall in december at adisham. The next train another 8 car (which i caught had to push the train from adisham towards faversham, but this train also broke down just after connecting to it. Another 8 car train (the one after that, so 3 hours worth of trains!! and 24 carriages) joined upto the rear and moved it towards canterbury.

I wish i had my camera on this day, it was litterally going into the distance at canterbury east (in kent) - this happened twice in two weeks, once it was 16 and the second time it was the 24 coach / 6 x 375 4 car trains!!

I know its not exactly related to DCR but i'd thought that i would mention it
