Help with buying addons

Post by alexnick »

Can anyone advise me on which TS addons I should buy? My shopping list is too long/expensive and I want to know which ones should be my priorities.

Donner Pass + Storm of 1952
LSE2: Great Eastern (whenever it is released)
Linie 51 (and why won't amazon send me the Berlin U-Bahn I ordered!?!)
Der Marschbahn OR Protrain 13
Bernina Express (from simtrain - though I don't know when it'll come out)
Seligman

...and I must buy the Dorset Coast CD when it comes out.

Any advice or opinions? Or dp people have other recommendations that they think are really worth buying (especially things coming out soon)?

I'm really just looking for route add-ons that are highly driveable. I like all sorts of operations, though straightforward A to B runs on flat and straight track can be a bit dull. Country wise, I'm inot most places - as far as UK railways are concerned, I like GWR and Southern stuff. I'm very into contintental railways, especially German/Austrian/Swiss, and train sim has taught me to like North American railways for their impressively long trains and enormous pieces of engineering.

I really just want to know which add-ons make for good train sim fun - I sometimes find it quite hard to judge from manufactureers descriptions.

With reference to the Seligman route in your list, there is a freeware version with a good reputation over at http://www.train-sim.com in their file library.

I did see the freeware Seligman route, but I'm reluctant to download too many large routes as I only have a very slow internet connection. Buying commercial routes can save several days downloading, and I don't have to store large download files incase I want to re-install routes. Call me impatient, but I do like the convenience of ordering routes on CD.

Well, Great Eastern is looking very good and is in the high end detail bracket. You have a mix of commuter runs, long distance passenger trains and freight.

The Protrain series is also very highly regarded, I don't think are many people who dislike those products.

I defnitely think there's a lot right with the Protrain series, though some of their more recent routes don't seem as exciting as their older ones. I may actually prefer the German Railroads series, which isn't available much through UK distributors.

I, too, think that Great Eastern will offer a great variety of stuff. There are too many add-ons that don't contain enough rolling stock or need more activities to realise the potential for operations, in my opinion - it's been one of the great advantages of the Trainsim community - you can get so much more out of commercial routes by downloading some more activities.

Anyway, I'm always keen to know what other add-ons people think offer this variety...
