0 to 25 MPH

Post by razorback »

Hi all,

Any one help me ? or has anyone had the same problem ? :(
I have been using MSTS for a number of years with no real problems at least none I couldn't correct myself or with brilliant advice from this site.

Problem
With certain Steam Locos i.e. example. V2-60800 & B17 Hinchinbrooke.
When running I can't achieve a speed greater than 25mph and it fluctuates between 0 - 25mph. I am running the locos attached to 6 BRexLMS custard livery coaches.
I tried the same setup with Kims 70000 Britannia, it ran with no problems.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

That sounds to me like the coaches and the steam engine have different braking systems - vacuum versus air and your engine is hauling the train with the train brakes on.

If you have got RouteRiter that will let you check the rolling stock and will highlight which brake types each vehicle has and let you change them with a click of the mouse.

Steam Driving even on basic mode is hard

75% forward 0-25
50% forward 25-60

that on a flat anyway.

I think that probably depends on whether you are manually firing or using the AI, and also, to a lesser extent, the loco being driven.

I usually use 75% up to 5mph
50% 6- 19mph
then i find i can usually go straight to 25% and just increase the regulator progressively as the speed increases.

Probably nothing like authentic driving, but then MSTS isn't an authentic sim :(

true, treat it authentically and end up being miles late 3 hours later in a stand off with some thing else, spoiling your fun. Not been there personally, but i know the feeling.

All depends on the load and conditions. Usually one would start on 75%, then gradually wind up it to about 25%. Higher cut offs are more efficient, just open the regulator a bit more and let it accelerate gradually. But there is no set cut off for set speeds. On our railway the drivers usually start in full gear (about 75%) the once doing about 7-10 mph they pull it right up into second notch (maybe 20-25%, its difficult to tell as there is no indicator), open it out and let it accelerate up to the speed you want. Notching up makes the engine much more efficient and save wear on the poor old fireman!

Andy

ps MSTS accelerates much too fast anyway! Lots of engines in the file library have the default scotsman engine physics giving them much more power than in real life.
