I wonder how many people were a tad disappointed the first time they ran the sim?
Compare the quality then with that of today.':D'

Wow, the Kuju one look really out-dated. Just a general muse, has anyone seen the MSTS advert in magazines? Look at the god-awful motion on the scotsman...

Speaking for myself I thought it was great the first time I ran it, but then there was nothing to compare it to. Now it's obvious just how primitive the original was.

Chris, I think your comparison picture of the two Dash-9s speaks more than the shot of the two Scotsmans. Another thing to observe: shot 2 shows original rails and textures - shot 1 shows Scottrax textures and freeware 'narrow' rail textures. Again, no comparison.

Now if the community can do that with MSTS I wonder what KRS and TMTS will look like 5 years after their release :) Boy, are we in for a treat the next few years!

Hi
I would agree...I was quite late getting msts.
I'd seen screenshots for months, and wasn't impressed at all.
Then my son bought it for my birthday in 2003, as he'd noticed the 50s had been added.
I remember sitting there watching the old green band moving, thinking this will be ....then when it fired up I was amazed.
In the cab of a Class50 with the big lump throbbing away behind me...drove them for days up and down the old S&C.
My son then found UKTS for me.....and I purchased MidEast as it mentioned Lincoln.
But my first addon was Woodhead.........and it took me hours to work out what to do.........but when it started WOW.
Cheers

I'd also agree that I thought it was incredible.

Went into Game looking for FS2002 and there it was. First I'd heard of it.

Christmas Day I drove The Scotsman, as driver and fireman along the length of the S&C just to see what I could get out of it now. I barely made it uo the first bank originally.

35 mins end to end, top speed of 148MPH and the wreckage still lies south of Settle station :)

Cheers

Me, too. Even with my budget PC with its 15" CRT and pathetic on-board graphics, MSTS knocked my socks off when I first saw it.

Not being a "gamer", I don't think I'd seen 3-D motion before.

Actually, I'm still impressed. Whatever the drawbacks of the original sim, creative people have pushed it to its limits and no-one has yet been able to replace it with anything better.

Maybe it's because I grew up without the PC that I'm able to be bowled over by a now dated piece of software, but 70 odd routes later, I still fire it up almost every day!

Hi
And talking of comparisons...I have these re-worked class50s...and the very kindly permission to upload them...so they should appear in the next couple of weeks.

There are still problems with the original shape....but I think they are a great improvement. :P

I bought mine on pre-order as soon as it was announced (for £70). When I got it I was a bit underwhelmed, not by the rolling stock since im not an avid train enthusiast i didnt know any better - the models looked ok to me. However the Settle and Carlisle wasn't very well done and the activities were limited. I thrashed up and down the North East Corridor a couple of times and finally decided that the Japanese routes were the best. Played them for about 6 months and then put the whole lot away and forgot it.

It was EB's London to Brighton which reawakened my enthusiasm. I saw it by chance in a PC shop, bought it and was amazed by it. Then I found out how to write activities and wrote a set for the route. Alan Salmon encouraged me and helped me a lot, and gradually my activities got better.

I think but for L2B and Alan's constructive approach my MSTS would still be buried at the bottom of a desk drawer, forgotten. I expect the whole learning curve will have to start again with the new sim(s), but not for a while. I'll be letting the dust settle for a few years to see which becomes the dominant one before making the leap. So there will still be activities for MSTS coming for some time to come - at least i think there will :)
