Graphics card upgrade woes
Hi all
i have just upgraded my graphics card to a nvidia 6600 256mb ddr,
it works brilliant on everything except msts, system crashes, freezes, error
messages i have never seen before,i decided to do a seperate install
of msts to experiment on, it will run but only on the lowest resolution,
with all the sliders at minimum,i was wondering if anyone has had simular
problems,i have run mprofile, and tried turning down the the hardeware
accelorator option on the card.
regards
kevin

First you need to go through the basics:
1. Did you uninstall the old cards drivers (DriverCleaner is the best for this, google)
2. Have you tried the desktop color in 16 bit as opposed to 32 bit?
3. Some error messages would be nice, and might give us more of an idea of what is going on
4. I'm running a Geforce 6600 512mb with the latest Nvidia beta drivers and no problems, maybe you should try those?
5. It may be an idea to backup all of your routes and trains & do a complete reinstall (Including going through the registry for any traces of MSTS) in case something has become corrupted somewhere.
Cheers

Hi
I'm interested in this thread , as I'm hoping to get this card for christmas.
I just wonder whether heat is involved, as msts is very intensive.
Make sure the slots above and below the GPU are not populated.
Cheers

There have been numerous reports of problems with MSTS caused by many of the newer versions of graphics cards and their drivers, most of them resolved by going back to an earlier driver for them which suits MSTS and making sure that DirectX-9.0c has been installed.
Previous drivers have to be un-installed first and there is a utility for making sure that all traces of previous ones have been removed:

Hope this helps !

Just got a new system with an XFX Geforce 7800GT 256mb
Runs MSTS with settings maxed out no problems even on routes such as London and South East with a fair bit of traffic. I would reccomend this card to anyone running MSTS as it has done the trick with the latest drivers included.

Hi all
Well i seem to be getting somewhere now,i took the advice and uninstalled
the drivers then loaded the latest ones in,i also removed the side cover from the pc, i think overheating was definately one of the causes for
my woes, everything else works brilliant, the new gt legends game runs
fantastic,as does trainz 2004,but poor old msts has had to be totaly reinstalled, although i still have the original install on my pc so i am swapping things from one to another at the moment,i still have some
stability probs but i am slowly getting there.
as for the graphics card its a cracker and i would recomend it the performance is incredible.as for its msts probs i think msts is showing its
age when it comes to higher graphics specs, cant wait for the next generation of train sims
thanks to all for advice.
regards kevin

I know im a bit late on replying to this had no net dam ntl
Ok on to the subject of heat and graphics cards etc etc... You shud really never run a pc with its side off as it renderes the internal cooling of the system useless as there is no airflow throught pc, belive it or not.
The best way around this is to make sure your case fans are identical and all rotate at the same rpm so on is pushing as fast as the other is sucking, so that you get even movent through the pc.
As Jon also said have the slots above and below the card empty, if you are still suffering from extreme heat problems the solution for the graphics card is to get an advanced cooler for it, they produce the cooling kits simalar to what is found on the 6800 ultras and they really do help keep things cool.
the link to the cooler is http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=62
i have one of these on my gfx card and it has helped no end
