A tilting train that actually tilts
Is it possible to make the APT or Pendolino tilt for train sim?

I had a demo of a I think a South African or Polish Train Sim once which did tilt the train in curves, all tracks in curves being usually tilted and BVE does rock carriages.

This is not quite true - there have been other threads on this subject and theoretically it IS possible just no-one has managed to produce a decent model yet that does it.OTTODAD wrote:Unfortunately, NO !ryanfuller wrote:Is it possible to make the APT or Pendolino tilt for train sim?

I suppose it could be done by "animating" a #1 Cab View on it's own to give the impression that it is tilting. But how do you tilt an entire train in an outside view, which would have to know when it is going into a curve, waggon by waggon ?qzdcg8 wrote:This is not quite true - there have been other threads on this subject and theoretically it IS possible just no-one has managed to produce a decent model yet that does it.

Just a bit of day-dreaming: What if you model the upper part (the one that tilts) as a moving part (like rods). It would be connected to an invisible pair of wheels which run in the middle of the wagon via an invisible rod. As the wagon moves through a curve, the "middle axis" is moved outside relative to the length axis of the wagon, the rod is fixed at a pivot to the wagon floor (which does not tilt) effectively pushing the moving top part of the wagon towards the inner side of the curve. As the pivot and the fixed wagon floor would not be visible either, you have all freedom necessary to adjust the relation between radius of curve and tilting of wagon top.
I have no idea if this can be done – I have never modelled anything, but I guess this idea has not been tried out before.
Of course the tilting behaviour is a bit different in the prototype but you could try to model that too, but that would involve more moving parts.
(Of course the above will not tilt the cab view. So you have to combine the ideas.)

I think its all down to the database lines like those representing the track in Activity Editor, just one line.
Now if the one line was to be three lines representing one running track with the middle line being used to create the path and the outer 2 as a balance that can be canvered into a curve so the wheels of the waggon are actually following the outerlines when tilting leaving the main paths dataline free, its just converting all the stock to recognise 3 datalines for one track.

..or you could just tilt your monitor as you go round corners!
