Has it Just Got To Big ???

Post by petethetim »

HI Guys & (gals) :fadein:
Since I installed Glasgow North Electrics V2
On Friday evening I am having problems the PC hangs up at loading MSTS & sometimes shuts down Stating MSTS has encountered an Error.
While this is a great improvement (as after initial install it would not start @ all) but on advice from several Forums members & the replacement of the TSECTION.DAT & updating my Ver of XTRACKS It would now work 3 times out of 4.
I wonder has my instalment has just got too large I have the 6 default routes plus
Ayr to Stranraer
London to Brighton
Brighton to Portsmouth
Glasgow North Electrics V2
Scottish Central
Thames Mersey
Cannock Chase
Ballyshannon
Far North v1.5
The Other Vern Moorehouse Highland Route
Highland Mainline
A German Route
& The LNER PACIFICS Add On
Most all of my added routes have additional activities

My System is. Athlon 1.83 Ghz with 128MB Nivida Graphics 512MB of PC2700 Ram 80Gig HDD (About 33% free space)
I have considered using train Store But I found when I had it on before it caused problems unpacking activities, (Would get the message you do not have this route or XXX route required to unpack)
Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated Sorry for being so long winded but wanted to detail things in full
Regards & Best Wishes

Peter

With only 512Mb of memory I would suggest getting RamBooster for a start, its free and will maximise the amount of memory available to MSTS, RouteRiter and Trainstore are must haves, if you check each route with RR before installing Trainstore you should then be able to speed up the loading process with Trainstore and free more memory for the activity you are running, as has been said before MSTS is very poor at utilising memory.

I have 768Mb DDR3200 memory and find that after MSTS is launched from Trainstore I can have only 380mb available, when I get the activity loaded I now use alt+tab, run Rambuster before starting to play - result 560Mb+ available

I've only got 256 mbs of RAM but find no problems. I also have 22 routes and God knows how many trains and consists. MSTS loads easily.

Train store is a good thing to use though. If I fire up MSTS without using it it can take 7 mins to load, with train store this is reducedto seconds.

Hi
From the horses mouth........so to speak

Free Ram Optimizer

Note: WinXP has a very state-of-the-art memory management, and you won't notice any performance improvement when using memory optimizers. All such optimizers/boosters available on the market - both freeware and trialware - are useless for XP and others to follow. Such programs are recommended for 95/98/ME only.

However I do use FreeRamXPpro

Have you tried unstoreing at least the route before adding the activites. Whenever I add activities etc. I always unstore everything before.

Hi Pete, the answer to your question is yes,You have 20ish routes and I Have 35 to 40 routes and without trainstore I would not be able to run MSTS at all, It don't matter what system you have got, it's a well known
fact that MSTS becomes very unstable the more files you load into it,so get trainstore, and when you want to load anything new,I have always used the unstore all button ( Mike will say just unstore the route)
but I have always done it this way.It is very rare I run it in easy mode,
in classic mode it displays all the activities assigned to each route.
Get it Pete, read up on it and give it a try :D

I would say you definitely have a problem with more routes than you computer can handle convenienty, and perhaps more consists than MSTS can use without getting buggy.

For routes, I use Routes On/Off--as simple as can be to use:

http://www.kcsinc.biz/

also, Otto has it on his site.

For consists, since Train Store and I don't get along, I just keep the ones for specific routes in subfolders and swap them in and out manually.

I use Trainstore - absolutely brilliant program, never had any problems and I couldn't use MSTS without it (literally).
