New models author's forgeting somthing!!!

Post by RobertM »

To all, :D

I have been browsing the forum's, and have noticed that there is alot of steam stock on the way which is of excellent quality that is well under way, but I feel that authors are forgetting somthing, loco cabs, imparticular, steam cab's!!!

Now I have noticed that a great deal of cab design is edging towards diesels & electrics, & I have to say there pretty well... excellent, but there is a poor number of steam cabs avalible, namily, LMS cabs for engines such as 7F's, 3F's & 4F's, plus there arn't any cabs that suit the early loco's, such as the LNWR Radial Tanks, nor the D15 class, to name a coule of examples...

Plus the total lack of Narrow Gauge cabs is apauling to me, running the Talyllyn while looking at the Scotsmans Cab, it is just...well apauling that no one made the effort!!!(no offence too the loco author, all the engines look great)

I am personaly hoping that the new KUJU sim will encourage authors to create cabs, as the loco it's self can be hugely improved by what the driver see's at the controlls.

But I am also aware that with the advent of the new sim, authors will start to edge away from MSTS, leaving most of there work unfinished cab wise :(

Cab creation probably one of the hardest and underestimated areas of MSTS and Trainz. It requires far more than a digital image slapped on the side. Take a look in the Cab Editor.

Access is required and some of these loco's only survive in small numbers, if at all. That access can jealously gaurded. Photo's are copyrighted and it's enforced. The odds are stacked against freeware modellers. I'd imagine it's not easy for payware one's.

I hadn't got access to cabs and my few releases used default cabs and sounds as that was the only way of uploading a ready-to-run model as an individual. A default cab can be replaced. There arn't that many for download but more are available on payware CD's. There's some 'generic' cabs but they don't suit everyone.

The default cabs work faultlessly, easy to use and we're familiar with them. A third-party cab has to be as easy to use and with steam locomotives controls are many and close together. It's a difficult task.

To say there is a 'total lack of Narrow Gauge cabs' is a bit of an overstatement. All of Kevin's early 2x Talyllyn models had some sort of custom cab, often made from parts of the Golsdorf 380. On the whole they work quite well. I also use some payware cabs that I have bought from time to time. The Kitson cab by 3DTS is good for small or even NG locos, and there are some freeware tank engine cabs on UKTS by BraveDan that would fit the bill. I never see a Scotsman or other default cab when I drive any NG engine, as I have replaced them all with something more suitable from elsewhere. There's even a couple of US NG cabs on T-S.com or avsim.com - a bit beefy for our 2ft gauge stock but better than Scotsman. You just have to get out there and hunt around the community file libraries.

Only if you visit that forum, if you glance by its hardly rammed down anyones throat !!!.

Cabs, well to be fair you've all but just about volunteered to make some new ones !!!, if theres such a crying lack then have a go at building some !!!, dont criticise others for not following your beliefs !!!.

Best
