Good old self proclaimed PC experts, always worth a laugh in my book.
Its funny how NO ONE else has ever said that they had to do this on installation or reinstallation.
I wonder if its an Atari version of the disk ? If its not then I suspect I know what the problem is, (PEBKAC).
If it is an Atari version then the original description was factually entirely incorrect. Surely a PC expert would realise the value of accurate problem description ? If an Atari version needed registering I doubt very much it would be done on an MS website.

If I had not overcome the problem, seems I would have been better off with an original copy from a few years ago.
But have you backed it up to CD?
Gary.

I'm a raw beginner on MSTS v1.2 having installed it just over a week ago (purchased from Play.Com).
I did not have to enter any serial number nor register the product to use it, it just played "straight out of the box". Indeed, there is no serial number provided on the packing so where would it come from?
That said I think the install process does ask if you want to register the product, note it asks asks not insists, but I said NO, and it all went OK.
As regards playing without a CD. I saw a comment on another site (can't remember quite where now) that said installing the update from the MSTS site would get around that.
I have installed the update even though I already had v1.2 and now don't need the CD inserted.
As for copy protection. For every programmer developing a copy protection system there are probably hundreds working out ways to get around it.
One simple way to back up should be to copy all the files from the CD's to the hard drive then if necessary you can install from there. This works with most software, even MS, so don't see any reason why it shouldn't work with MSTS.
If you use drive caddies, as I do, it's a simple matter of backing up to a spare drive that you can plug in as when required.
As MS aren't supporting or developing the software any more can't see why the end user shouldn't "protect" his/her purchase from some possible future failure.
