Sound Issues - Help!
Hi Gang,
I have my sound settings in train sim set to full, except the 'Master Volume' which is set on the next notch down from the top and on certain routes, the trains either make no noise or very quiet noise externally, but the inside is okay. Sometimes when the train is quiet, the horn won't work at all! Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this?

Re: Sound Issues - Help!
Has your sound always been this way, or has it just started to happen? Can't shed too much light on your problem, though I do remember something similar happening to my installation. If I remember correctly I had just downloaded and installed a loco, and it placed a file in the Common Sound folder which screwed up the sound on all of my engine stock!!Coxster wrote:Hi Gang,

On the other hand, if it is just certain Running Stock this happens to it could be that you have wrongly installed a downloaded Engine. If so, a read through the engines READ ME file might be a good idea.
Other than that, I hope somebody else can shine some light on this for you.
Paul.

Hi
Have you increased the ammount of sounds in your sounds confiq file?....if not this was discussed on the forums yesterday.
If that don't help....you need more RAM...as the first thing to go is sounds in msts.
A quick check is to turn down the graphics settings...and if the sounds return...bingo.
Cheers
Jon

If you have your sound sliders up to the max you should be hearing quite a racket!
This could be a lot of things, including the sound card as it is a new PC. A visit to the Card makers site to see if there is any incompatability issues might help. It could need new drivers, or the original drivers re-installing.
Other than that, I think you are going to have to wait on someone reading your post who might be familiar with this problem.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
Regards,
Paul.

Creative cards are notorious for being incredibly buggy!
(For example, on some machines they will run happily in one slot, but not in the adjacant slot) in addition to this, the drivers are totally awful; If you have it working properly in all situations, and have updated the drivers, you are incredibly fortunate.

I had this problem with a Soundblaster live card. Sounds internally but not externally.. turned the speakers to 2 speaker mode and hey presto working sound!
Did some more tinkering to cut down background processes (MS-SQL, MySQL and some other tasks), turned 4.1 speaker mode back on and I had external sound again. I think MSTS starts to cut back on sound then visuals if it struggles for memory.
I also downloaded the latest (well 2004!) drivers for the card but that had no effect. If you still have problems drop me a pm.

Have a prod through one of the major computer tech support forums (Ie. Windrivers) or have a google for a popular Creative card, & this will show you the state of the problem. One point though- If the card came installed in your PC, then you're likely to be OK, as they should have worked these issues through.

If all the above good advice doesn't work, try turning down the sound-card acceleration. You can find this in Control Panel/Sounds & Audio Devices/SpeakerSettings/Advanced/Performance. Alternatively, go to Start/Run, type "dxdiag", choose the Sound tab, and adjust the slider. I think this was suggested here some time ago by Stuart Williamson, - it worked for me when I lost sounds in rearward cabview.
