It was nice to see Cambrian come second albeit 7 votes out of a community supposedly of 1000's is not a very representative turnout. Also the trouble this type of survey - particularly when it includes freeware work - is that it's very easy to make route creatorsfeel unappreciated when they've slaved for months in the route and 3D editors to create what they feel is their masterpiece and it doesn't get a mention. (I particularly slaved over West Highland as did Peter Holton to make the models) but didn't even get mentioned. Now I'm made of sterner stuff than some and my reward comes from looking at the number of CD's sent out and the positive feedback received but others of a more nervous disposition might take it a bit more personally.

Hi

I was a bit surprised as well as a couple of the routes I not heard of.

Had over 700 people look at the original post but only 25 or so people put their best 5 down. lol

But maybe most of those 700 people are just the same people who posted before, just checking the updates.

Or everyone else are just lazy

Im surprised swanage didnt have more votes :( it was my favourite until i got Burton-Derby

Vern - that is precisely the reason I do not reply to surveys like this now. It is totally unfair on all the other authors whose work maybe missed out because it was so difficult to choose the best out of a very good crop.

Dan,

I must admit I was gobsmacked to still see Midest in there despite its age!

Well, Tim, I seem to recall Matt's CD sales numbers showed Mid-East way up there at the top. :)

I think many or most of us would agree that Cambrian was a benchmark and Mid-East set a standard for freeware routes that still holds up.

But there have been many fine routes since and I think most of us would keep our preferences to ourselves for the reasons that Vern mentioned. I'm not agaainst polls per se, but I think the fact that only a handful of people voted speaks for itself. :)

Hi

I think I may of started a problem with this poll. If i have I apologise.

When I did my top 5 I knew straight away what the first 3 were but I had a prob with last 2.

If more people had put their top 5 down then routes like West Highland, Blackpool tramway, Stranraer etc hopefully would of been up there instead of the more commercial routes

Hi all, may I suggest that we et the threads up twice ie one for commercial routes and the other for freeware routes or do others feel this may still upset some creators more ??

btw Vern thoroughly enjoy West Highland even though I've only had it for a couple of weeks, and would have made No 6 in my listing

Cheers

""""I particularly slaved over West Highland as did Peter Holton to make the models) but didn't even get mentioned""""""""

That point about route surveys crossed my mind as well.

I love the West Highland route. The scenery is immense, i've been up that way a few times and the scenery on the route is very realistic.

The other trouble about these surveys is that people will put down the particular route they are playing at the time. If you had asked the same question 2 months ago the West Highland would have been in my list.

Actually, comeing to think about it, there is not a route I have ordered from UKTS that i've been disapointed with. When you think they are freeware then it puts some commmercial products to shame.

This can be compared to the top ten music survey, you tend to list the last band or peice of music you listened to, for me it could be The Damned on one day or a Telemann concerto the next.

I didnt vote because i find it extremely difficult to decide between some of them and could not rate one over another. As Vern says voting is sometimes counter productive and as someone who cant do routes at all ( and i have had a go a couple of times ), I dont feel its right to criticise ( for by implication thats what you are doing by not voting for a particular route ) anyone for the terrific effort they must have put in to produce anything at all.

For my part I've enjoyed every route ive either bought, downloaded or been given and my thanks go to those who worked on them. Yes I do have favourites, but even that list changes week by week.
