RAM..!! what is best for MSTS.??

Post by tinsley »

I recently upgraded my MOBO and RAM..
I now have 2X512MB of DDR 400 RAM...my computer says it is dual channel 128 bits and works great...
but MSTS routes eats vast amounts of RAM and doesn't give it back... so would it make sense to increase my RAM to 2 GB by adding the 2X512MB DDR330 that were on my previous MOBO and avoiding paging..???
I have tried it and my computer says 2GB 64 bits..and works well too..
Which solution is best..for MSTS.. :o ???
Any experts out there.??

In fact MSTS doesn't even use that much. I put an extra 512mb into my 256mb machine and the whole PC running including MSTS and all the usual background stuff (AV / Firewall / background programs etc) never takes memory useage above 376mb.

512mb is more than enough. If you already have 1GB you have ample :)

DDR2 RAM would be ideal but it would mean changing your motherboard. Thats the expensive solution anyway... :(

Hi
I would add the RAM...if you already own it.
One of the biggest problems is the OS....but XP can handle that ammount.
Certainly turning "Paging" off will help msts to run with less stutter.
The most I've seen loaded into memory from msts is 768Mb...which is why my PC used to crash (only had 512Mb ATT)...this was while I was writing an activity at Watford on TM....I also used to start to loose sounds.
Cheers

I have read of instability problems when paging is turned off. Do you regularly run with it off and if so, does it give you any problems?

Hi Tony
If I remember correctly you have quite an old PC....I would not recommend you turn it off.

I did try turning paging off on my PC ( which isnt very old either ), but 768mb ram wasn't enough and the PC stopped working, so ive had to turn it on again. :(

Do you in fact constantly run with it turned off?
