Atomic Systems

A little while ago my Dad and I got on a train to travel the the Hope Valley line and as we were entering Manchester we noticed to the left another nine or ten roofed platforms curving gently away to the left almost like a completely separate station. My old man knows his stuff when it comes to ralways but he didn't know anything about this, can anyone identify the station?

That website is good Ive just looked at at and found out my office is on the site of riverside station in Liverpool!

Im sure that station mentioned above was a parcels depot for rail until some time in the 80s it even had overhead wires in it.

(the manchester one I mean!)

Is there any other examples of virtually complete mainline city terminii still standing 45 years after their last passenger use?

Well there is the G-mex centre in Manchester former Central station probaly the most intact Roof wise anyway

Although beautifully restored it quite clearly isn't a railway station anymore, whereas Mayfield is.

I've been going in and out of Piccadilly for the past 10 years or so and always wondered what that run down look alike station was, I knew that trains used it as their is bare patches where the old points used to be leading into that dis-used station.

Wonder if we will ever see Voyagers running into Mayfield in the future if Piccadilly ever runs out of space!

I've been to the G-Mex a couple of times, knew that it was a old station, also been to the old Liverpool Street station to the National Science Museum to see some of the old trains, how many working stations did Manchester have at one time!!!

I really hope Mayfield is re-opened at some point, and it is restored to its former glory.

City Centre stations:-

1. Liverpool Road
2. London Road/Piccadilly
3. Victoria
4. Central
5. Exchange
6. Mayfield
7. Oxford Road
8. Salford (just)

Then there's the smaller ones, still in the city centre

9. Ardwick
10. Deansgate

Well, Wolverhampton Low Level is pretty complete (including Brunel Broad Guage track and LMS BG)

I've seen that every time I go through Wolves on the way to Brum, I see a very old carriage at the end of one of the platforms as well! When did that close down? What connections did it had?

One of the sadest sites in the world. Ecery time I pass or see old line I feel sad but when I see a station as this one then i'm particulary sad.

Thats said I love visiting old railways especially if the stations in whatever state still stand

Wolverhampton Low Level closed in the 1970's. The LMS BG was used as a stores van during it's period of opening. It was left there when the station closed, and is somehow apparently owned by EWS.

I feel sad when i go past welshpool because there is a big, boring, grey station with no building. Instead with a couple of shelters and benches. Then you look over the road and see a beutiful grand building. Then you see that it has a platform and realise that that beuty was the original station before they put a big bypass in, then you realise that that station has become a retail centre and it breaks your heart........
