'The Train Now Departing'

Post by Christopher125 »

Hi

I seem to remember I had a video of this series, however it has been long lost. However, I seem to remember something about the lyme regis line on it, and included people walking the trackbed. Is this true? If so, could anyone lend a copy to me or point me to somewhere I can buy it.

Cheers,

Chris.
Just had alook through my old collection and found "The train now departing"
BBC 2 15th. November 1988.
I've not played it for a long time but will have a look later on to see if it's the same as you think.
If you're really in need of this I could put it on DVD (if the VHS tape's not knackered) for you.

Regards

The third programme of the series "The Holiday Line" does indeed contain about two or three minutes of a train on the Lyme Regis branch all of it out in the country.

The people walking all over the trackbed was at the Woking 150 celebrations with which that programme opened.

The only others I can find are:
Lines of industry
Survivors (Port Line restoration on the Bluebell and Peak Rail Buxton.)
Sorry,
I didn't catalogue my tapes very well back in those days, but didn't erase anything, so I guess I just missed that one.

There's a facility on Amazon where you request a title and state a top price you will pay from other suppliers.

More in hope than expectation I recently requested the Sunday Mirror VHS of the 1981 World Speedway Final which is long since deleted. It arrived within three weeks and cost £15. Now safely tucked up on DVD and filed! :D

Chris,

I've just tracked down my copy (or rather I've found the box - where the video itself is God knows) and the blurb on the back is as below.

The Holiday Line

"Steam enthusiast Barry Smith delights in his childhood memories of the 'Atlantic Coast Express'. But retracing the route from Waterloo to Exmouth leaves him in doubt that the journey is no longer the best of the Summer holidays".

It's been a while since I watched it, and whilst I seem to remember Mr. Smith poking around on the Exmouth branch, I can't specifically remember anything about the Lyme Regis branch (and as I don't have a TV at the moment I'm afraid I can't check).

For information, the other programmes in the Series were "The Long Drag", "The West Highlander", "Lines of Industry", "Steam on the Isle of Man", and "The Survivors".

Chris,

I've got a copy on order form 101cds at the moment (£14.99) but I haven't actually received it yet. I'll keep you posted when it arrives. There are some nice shots of the ancient Adams 4-4-2T locos in BR striped livery in the book.

Obviously not on the main lines at Woking, but the sidings or wherever the locomotives were exhibited.

I have a video of the complete series. That episode does indeed feature shots of the Lyme Regis branch, but most were taken after it's closure.

It will doubtless be no longer be available but I've a video entitiled 'By Southern to the West' which features movie footage of The Lyme Regis Branch.

It was published by Transport Video Publishing.

Much of it is in colour and well worth looking out for.
