Some keys not working in MSTS with Windows XP Home

Post by PaulCh »

Hi All

I have finally upgraded my PC and re installed MSTS but I am finding that certain keys don't work as they should in the game.

When driving ' is supposed to apply the brake, p lower raise the pantograph, etc. These keys don't work when pressing ' it gives the message Brake Released (same as ;) and when the p key is pressed the screen shows pantograph down followed immediately by pantograph up. I have also tried using the controls in the cab. For example when braking I can drag the brake and the screen shows self lap x% but immediately returns to released.

Any ideas?

The PC is an Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz with 1GB RAM and a GE Force GT6600 128Mb Graphics card. Windows XP Home Version 2002 service pack 2.

Cheers

If you haven't got simple controls switched on try pressing alt Tab to see if that fixes the problem. If not it may be a DirectX problem.

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

It is only certain keys that don't work such as ' and p. I have checked my keyboard and it is setup as UK. Plus the mouse when operating the same controls has the same effect. I also have simple controls selected. I will check my version of Direct X but I would expect it to be up to date as I have only had the PC a month.

If you really meant that then thats your problem. the simple controls keys work differently. Or did you mean to say you DONT have simple controls selected.

Hi

In the options under realism the box that says simple controls is checked. I have read the manual and it doesn't mention using any other keys for braking so I am now confused. This all used to work on my Windows 98 SE PC so I am assuming it is related to XP.

Just an outside thought..

You are not using a compact keyboard (like a laptop) where the P an ' keys (plus others) can be used as a number keypad if you press a Fn key or similar.......

Hi

Its a Microsoft keyboard (Multimedia type). It does have a function key on it which if not pressed doesn't allow the f1-f12 keys to function correctly.

Try unchecking the "use simple controls" setting in options.
Im sure thats the problem. Simple controls are so simple as to be useless :(

Hi

I will try this tonight when I get home.

It seems strange that there is no way of braking the train when using the simple controls as the A, D keys work for the throttle.
