In saying that there are a few routes that i have that need 64mb graphics memory but i only have 32mb and they seem to run alright.
have driven LSE which is UKFS and it runs quite smooth on a XP2800+
with 1024 ram and 32mb graphics card, although the pc is optimised for Vid editing so a lot of unused processes have been shut down.

That would be an interesting avenue for more research.nestfilms wrote:.............. although the pc is optimised for Vid editing so a lot of unused processes have been shut down.
"What processes (and Windows XP Services) can be shut down to optimally run MSTS and how can this be done automatically?"

Download it and try it! Mind, 1.1 is perhaps a little slow but I've seen it run OK on a 1.8ghz. Don't forget, you can always turn the quality settings down until it seems OK.ilovequo wrote:Hi

I think the only problem you'd get is on the approach to Scarborough where there is intense trackwork and to a lesser extent Whitby. The NYMR and Scarborough Whitby coast run sections ought to be just fine though, even on full quality, so don't rule it out altogether.

You could refer to a site such as http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm and look at the services guides and disable the services you don't need. I have turned off a number of services that are really only of use in corporate environments.dforrest wrote:That would be an interesting avenue for more research.nestfilms wrote:.............. although the pc is optimised for Vid editing so a lot of unused processes have been shut down.

As for doing it automatically - once you stop and disable the services they generally won't come back unless you do further configuration changes to the PC. For ending process do a search for "Enditall" on these forumns for peoples experiences with that tool.

Shutting down programs with EndItAll is only for the current session; they should all return on a reboot.
Certainly for any video work it is useful as when an automatically scheduled service kicks in it can cause a hiccup to the video stream (that won't go away on a reboot!)

As far as i am aware "end it all" will only shutdown programs running in the background.
by shutting down certain processes like remote registery or Aleter you
can free up alot of rescources.
The problem is some people use different ones to others, if you are on a domain there are processes which can't be shut down but then if your not
there are quite a few which are running when they don't need to be.
If i get time i will try and draw up a list of what they do and when they can be shut down. Also there are a lot of tweaks to do with paging files
and graphic settings.
As a guide if you do CTRL ALT DEL then click on task manager then select processes, at the bottom left hand corner you will see the number of processes running.
How many? i can get down to 18, the machine i'm typing this on at work has not been optimised and is currently at 32
Also have a look in the task bar near the clock how many icons have you got? i've got 1

I agree. It never claimed to do anything other than that.
That is why I recommended looking at http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm since that site has a guide to what the services do what in various operating systems. I thought it might save you some time and trouble. There is also a ton of relevant information in the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.nestfilms wrote:by shutting down certain processes like remote registery or Aleter you

To optimise my PC for MSTS I just hit the uplink button on the network hub that is between my PC and the broadband router to kill my internet connection and then dump my virus scanner and firewall on the PC. Then I run Enditall to kill all the non-protected processes thus maximising the system resources available to MSTS. When I am done I logoff and then logon again and hit the uplink button again to restore outside connectivity.
