Headboards problem

Post by longbow »

I'm using invisiwag to create a set of disc headcodes.

In ShapeView 1.3 the freight animation shape appears correctly:

However, when loaded into MSTS only of the (lower) discs appears. The animation shape needs repositioning but can anyone explain why the other discs disappear?

Hi
I'm assuming the discs are actually all one s file ....but are they all in the same plane.? ie all in line when viewed from the side.
Certainly when I've been playing with headboards...using SFV...will not work and I've had to start the sim up...make adjustments etc....and very often I couldn't see the headboard...but by using the view4 key(hacked version) zoomed in and found it inside the loco ie too short still?
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Jon

Unfortunately Shape Viewer does not show freight animation shapes correctly. I find that the only way to position them is to run the loco in the sim itself, reposition the shape using Shape File Manager, rerun the sim, and repeat these steps until it is correctly positioned. Often you will finds parts of the shape below the track. View 4 again helps finding these.

The upper discs are slightly behind the lower ones. I've moved the freight animation shape well away from the loco and the ground and I still see only one disc, so the others aren't simply being hidden. Putting the animation into the loco eng file rather than onto invisiwag makes no difference.

Perhaps I'm missing something more basic. I'm exporting the shape from 3DTS as a scenery item - is this correct?

Try moving it three yards up and three yards to the side. Do you see all of it?

Incidentally, positioning the loco onto the animation shape using the Load Second Shape option in Sview gave exactly the shifts required in SFM. But still only one disc visible!

I've tried moving it well clear of both ground and loco. Still only one disk visible.

Try making the headcode shape into a wagon by refering a .wag file to it.
get the size from the .sd file.
That way you will be able to see it.

Thanks for your comments. Still not clear what I was doing wrong, but I remade the headcodes as a single shape and that worked. I then used a freight animation to apply the headcodes.

So here is the 3DTS Merchant Navy reskinned as 35014 Nederland Line, wearing appropriate headcodes and standing on the turntable at Weymouth, its final shed.

That looks really good. Well done. Is the route including Weymouth your own work?

Best wishes, Bob.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, the picture is from my Weymouth-Bournemouth route, carefully framed to conceal its early stage of development - follow the www link below for more details.

I have just uploaded a selection of these disc headcodes to fit the 3DTS Bullied Pacifics from the Swanage route.

Can you possible adapt them for freeware locos?

Southern headcode No 17, as displayed on the Rebuilt locomotive above was certainly used on Bournemouth - Weymouth services up to nationalisation as the line from Dorchester to Weymouth belonged to the GWR.

However, as I understand it, when the line from Dorchester to Weymouth was transferred to the Southern Region, post-nationalisation, headcode No 14 was used. I have photographs showing this, and have one of an up Channel Islands Boat Express leaving Weymouth in 1966 where 34012 is displaying a mixture of headcodes No 14 and 17. The latter may well have been used as presumably the ferry service would be non-stop to Waterloo.

The line from Dorchester to Weymouth was "Southernised" so much so that upper quadrant signals were installed on the GWR posts and a new Southern-style red-brick signal box at Weymouth was opened in 1957.
