Bell incab

I am running an activity for the Thames Mersey with a class 87 003. Just about every time I pass a signal this damn alarm bell rings in the cab. What, pray tell, does this mean?

That'll be the AWS... It'll ring every time you pass a clear aspect, then (in real life, not in MSTS) when you pass a caution/stop aspect, you will have to press a button to stop the bell as a safety precaution or the emergency brakes will apply...

Bell for clear signal. Any other aspect sounds a loud and annoying horn, which has to be cancelled.

Do those systems exist in North America too?

Matt,

Some railroads here have a version of Automatic Train Stop and cab signals. The NEC is a good example. As far as a warning sound, I am not sure. Most engines in North America have the alerter, but that is more for crew safety then signals.

I had always believed that a bell signal ( = clear signal ahead ), did not have to be acknowledged, a horn ( = signal ahead at danger ), has to be acknowledged to avoid automatic brake application.

That's right - a bell rings for a green signal only, which does not need to be acknowledged. Any other signal or advance warning board will cause a horn to sound, which must be acknowledged.

Just be grateful you dont get the driver alerter that acts as a dead mans device, that a lot of modernish EMU's have now thats really annoying!
