Its a system where a trains speed is measured on the approach to a caution or danger signal, if the trains speed is too high or the brakeing curve is not great (?) enough, then the emergency brakes are applied automatically.

There is also a train stop at the signal, which applies emergency braking if a train SPADs, at any speed. Which should hopefully stop the train within the overlap.

At least thats my understanding. sure somebody will put me right if I am wrong...

the AWS bell/ horn also sounds at distant signals, depending on their aspect.
