There are a whole family of worms out there that exploit a Windows vulnerability publicised last week such a short time before the monthly cycle of Microsoft patches (released 2nd Tuesday each month) that Microsoft have not had time to produce and test a patch in time for the monthly release. They (Microsoft) indicate they will break the monthly cycle and publish a patch as soon as it is tested.LucaZone wrote:My home system (Running Norton) hasnt reported any problems, but shows logs of preventing virus attacks and intrusions in the time frame mentioned, while at work my computer system (Running Mcafee) has been disconnected from the network while they clean the infected files and remove illicit material (although they are unsure if that was caused by the virus)
Though my protected home system could have been taking advantage of having Anti-Spam / Pop-up / Virus / Adware / Intrusion protection also as I have the full internet protection package installed. So it may be that the AV software alone is not enough to hold the infection back.

See http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/viru ... x?ID=40713 for an example of what is out there. The problem is that as each worm mutates as script kiddies get their hands on it the AV vendors have to scramble to produce new signature files. Some days this week we got 3 or 4 updates to our machines from our corporate security guys. When I am at home I check at least 3 or 4 times a day for updates to the signature files.
