Though my protected home system could have been taking advantage of having Anti-Spam / Pop-up / Virus / Adware / Intrusion protection also as I have the full internet protection package installed. So it may be that the AV software alone is not enough to hold the infection back.
There are a whole family of worms out there that exploit a Windows vulnerability publicised last week such a short time before the monthly cycle of Microsoft patches (released 2nd Tuesday each month) that Microsoft have not had time to produce and test a patch in time for the monthly release. They (Microsoft) indicate they will break the monthly cycle and publish a patch as soon as it is tested.

See http://uk.news.yahoo.com/041110/152/f6c7n.html for more details

See http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/viru ... x?ID=40713 for an example of what is out there. The problem is that as each worm mutates as script kiddies get their hands on it the AV vendors have to scramble to produce new signature files. Some days this week we got 3 or 4 updates to our machines from our corporate security guys. When I am at home I check at least 3 or 4 times a day for updates to the signature files.
Kindest regards

If they are anything like our IT support guys they will take copies of any MP3 files they find and then delete them from the PC :( After all - that is how they build up their MP3 library :P

I have a double firewall on my PC, Zone Alarm and Norton 2005. And my computer has had only 1 trojan which got zapped within seconds, and the worms have been stampped on as soon as they were spotted.

Nah we're all good mates, they just found it funny that I got caught out. Due to the nature of my work, I have to support most of my own software and hardware, so we work together alot.

lol, I once was reading a thread about someone who wanted their parents to buy a new computer, so the guy wanted to really really kill it. Amongst putting the HDD in a Microwave to zap it to pieces, someone mentioned un-installing any piece of Anti-Virus, any firewalls or anything, and then merrily going on your way round the net.
Sounds like fun!

ive had viruses left right and centre thrown at me everything from java's to trojan horse and more recently beagle.v which without norton 2005 cannot be removed. Norton 2005 and Norton Go back 2005 are the best yet. As for running Norton and Zone Alarm arent they made by the same company symantec.

I dont think so. Zone Alarm is made by Zone Labs.
Mind you that company could be owned by Norton, but ive never heard it said before.

Nah, they are two different companies, otherwise they would make their AntiVirus's completly compatable.
