Some ideas for new routes, activities, locos etc

Post by Perks »

Just out of curiousity has any route/activity/loco designer tried any of the following or has plans to;
  1. A christmas special - seeing as most private railway lines seem to have them for the kids.
  2. A ghost train. Not just a ghostly loco but a spooky route to go with it!
  3. Watercress or Bluebell lines.
  4. Accidents or hazrds such as vehicles on the line, broken rails, workman on the line, vandalism, leaves on the line, the wrong kind of snow etc.
  5. Activities and routes based on films, plays, books etc ( I've already seen the Hogwart special).

The first one in section 5 is really going to appeal to railwayman who have been involved with the real thing (as I have). Not something I wish to reproduce in the simulation, thank you very much.

I would like to make a comment or two here.

As an freeware activity designer, I really do not pay attention to requests. Why, you ask? Because I will do things that interest me. That way I am going to do a better job. If I take a request, I may just through something together, may not put my best effort into it. Though if it dovetails with my interests I may do it. The only people that have some influence are my team, I will give it a shot on a route or an activity if they think it is a good idea.

I have had more than one person DEMAND that I do a certain type of activity. My response is usually - got your checkbook handy? They usually get very quiet when they hear my rates.

Another reason I do not do requests is that if I do 1, everyone else will demand that I do theirs.

I think the payware people need to pay attention to what people want, but in the end I think it is better to do what you like.

I have a question for yous:

1:Where have you seen the Hogwarts Special activty, can you give me details like the route it uses and where I can get it.

2:If someone could give me a route of the Titfield Thunderbolt I can surely create an activity there.

3:If you know where I can get a model of Diesel 10 off of Thomas and the Magic Railroad, and I can get permission off of HIT Entertainment to upload Thomas stuff, I could also create an activity there

I did a Christmas Steam Special activity for the London to Brighton route (LBE) ages ago - its still available for download. In contrast to kevin, I often do activities on request. I like to add value to a route and if i can do that by helping someone out i generally try to oblige.

I cant always do it straight away - it has to fit in with other stuff, and obviously if it interests me theres an incentive to do it sooner rather than later - but i have done several on request.

What annoys me slightly though is having done that - not getting any thanks from the person who asked. And thats happened several times. :(

I do activities for route designer, both payware and freeware, at their request. I just do not take many requests from end users.

Must second that too as regards route building, Kev. I've started building the Swedish Inlandsbanan, which is a relatively obscure Scandinavian route which relatively few people have probably even heard of. However I want to recreate my memories of travelling over the route in the 1980's an experience which is quite difficult these days as the line is mothballed most of the year.

It also fits in with my penchant for building wild, remote - almost primordial - and basic single track routes.

I hope at the end of the process others will enjoy my vision, but it's being done primarily for my benefit. Particularly with the time required to build the average route - maybe 4 to 6 months - it is essential the project is one which you are either passionate about (like Inland) or getting a few £100 in your back pocket at the end.
