There are at least two products 'in development' - one, as has been said from Train Artisan, one from PI Engineering under the TrainMaster banner.
Unsurprisingly both developers are a little tight-lipped about what will and will not be in the eventual product. Many properties and features have been requested and proposed; both companies have said that they will try to incorporate as much as possible, but until they get code developed (which has to be done from scratch as no MS/Kuju code is available to them for copyright reasons) nothing is certain.

All that has been released for certain so far is some screenshots indicating the level of graphic and animation quality we can expect to see. For anything more, we are all dependent on what the developers wish to release - and that will happen when they are ready and not before.

Train Artisan's new simulator:

http://www.trainartisan.com/

Definitely will include multiplayer, in fact they seem to be focussing mainly on this, involving several players as train crews and at least one (maybe more?) players as signalmen / power box controllers / dispatchers).

Trainmasters simulator on these forums:

From a couple of oblique references made by the developers it would appear they intend to include multiplayer in this as well.

Generally if you're an MP freak, the future's looking good.

No, neither will be MP only, but will include it alongside a 100% working single player game.
