To change your quote "the customer may not always be right but the customer is always the customer!"

I teach a customer satisfaction course, for service people (the type that tell you they are the experts), at a local college and it really takes some work to get this concept into their heads.

My motto has always been "the man with the gold makes the rules" whether it your boss or the customer. I guess it should be "person" to make it politically correct.
