MSTS : A new breed of Errors

Post by MeridianNick »

Hiya all,

A my friend has recentley purchase MSTS v1.2 (DVD Case). After a sucessful installation we firied MSTS up.

But everytime he ran an activity or Explore Mode, his MSTS just shuts off without an error message or warning, and returns me to the desktop. This similarly happens with Acivities.

As said no error messages seem to appear

What might be the problem?

There doesn't seem to be anything in the troubleshooter!

Good point. If you can give us the specification of the system and the settings you are running MSTS at, that might highlight something obvious.

That system is more powerful than the one I had when I first got MSTS so nothing wrong there.

Have you updated to the latest video drivers?

What apps are running in the background? Any virus checkers?

How long since the HDD was defragged?

How much disk space is free on the HDD?

What is Windows swapfile size?

Is all your RAM definitely being read by the BIOS?

It's a long shot but there is a possible incompatibilty with the graphics and the refresh rate. In Windows, Run dxdiag and check out the second page of DirectX . If the PC fails to run all the check DirectX feature checks, go to More Help and enter a lower refresh rate. Try 60 and see if it works. if Ok go to 65 and so on. You may find there is a maximum rate above which the PC will not give you a picture. thgis solved my similar robklem when I upgraded to a GeForce MX440 card

The drivers make no difference. Last defrag was a few months ago. Refresh rates make no difference. Swap file is plenty big enough. All RAM recognised by the BIOS

But still the problem continues...

You do have the latest video drivers then?

If your last defrag was 'a few months ago' I would recommend you do that first off, as I defrag my PC about once a month. Did you check how much free disk space there is on the HDD? And stuff running in the background?

I'd recommend visiting nVidia's site and downloading the lastest video driver for your graphics card. I recently installed a new game on my PC and had this exact same problem which the update solved.

My guess would be a faulty install of MSTS. Try a reinstall and if no different try to get another copy of the disks as you may have faulty ones. One of the reasons MSTS crashes to the desktop is if some file or other is not present. Sometimes it lets you know which file sometimes it doesn't.

Hope this helps.
