Railway Plan Handed Cash Boost
Plans to restore a historic railway in County Durham have been given a significant boost with a £ 900.000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A non-profit company aims to restore the line and run services between Bishop Auckland and Weardale.

Weardale Railways will spend £5.5m on the project and will begin limited stean hauled services this summer.

More news at 7

haha if you believe that you will believe anything. I am from Bishop and know how bad the line is, we ran a steam train down it in 1993 and the track was awful then. 11 years can do a lot to wooden sleepers. I don't think they will be running this summer I';m sad to say (I don't even think they have an engine).

Yea but the slight difference is the Wensleydale line got on with it, Weardale have been messing around for 10 years, they spent money on wagons to sell on after restoration. I want it to happen, but I have my doubts over the whole project.

I don't know if the pictures the BBC used were from a library or not, but the bulletin screened a few weeks (it have been a couple of months actually ) showed them relaying track, sleepers etc.

I don't know how long this line is, but those working on the track certaining didn't seem in much of a hurry :-?.

They have been relaying the line at some points, its about 18 miles long but the plan is to use the Wolsingham (this is where all the stock is at the old steel works) - Stanhope (the Weardale Railways headquarters is in the station), which is about 5-10 miles.

Note that we also took over a line that was still operated by Network Rail for the British Army (i am currently a guard, hopefully soon to start driver training  )

Beware all those who know me! 0X
