Great British Steamers

Post by Christopher125 »

Hi

I was wondering whether there are any proper details for this pack. It appears to be another addon based on the Roundhouse pack, combining stuff from different authors, including Paul Gausden, 3DTS, Kim Durose, NVR etc. I was wondering though, are they going to come with their own sound? And have permission been granted for the use of all the engines shown in the slide show type thing on contact-simulations site?

I definately WON'T be getting this addon pack...

A) Locos I've got from other addon packs :o

B) Locos I've got for free!

Sorry, but this one looks like a HUGE rip-off!

It may well be a good bunch of models, but for anyone even half interested in realism, where could you realistically run more than two or three? Seems to me a little like having to buy a whole CD for two songs.

Paul's model has definitely been updated for this release, with more detail, etc. My assumption is that other authors have also updated their models. I think at this stage in the game a payware release of previously available unchanged freeware a la Roundhouse would be commercial suicide, so I'm confident we won't be seeing a rip off.

Nudehamster - remember what was highlighted on another thread. 70% of the MSTS market hasn't a clue about downloadable stuff off the net. What appears to be repackaged old stuff to you that is too disparate to make a coherent collection might be manna from heaven for the vast majority of MSTS owners - people who only have default routes and stock, plus a commercial add-on or two.

Not everyone has the ability to download either, so I can imagine these CD compilations will be sought after. I think it would be more popular if it came with appropriate stock for each loco, so that there is additional value beyond playing with loco's.

I've frequently bought CD's for just a couple of songs, as many have, nothing new here.

l'd concur with Martins view, to look at another simular item, books, ever seen how many times a book is reprinted, the only difference is the cover and the print date, caught me out a few times that has.

But it is often a standard retail stratergy to repackage stuff to appeal to new and different audiances, not that this has happend here, just saying it goes on.

As Rick says, dont judge a product by its cover, esp screen shots, though it does not appeal to me for reasons posted by someone above l'm sure it will to many, there are some good locos on there l'll admit.

A screen shot can't tell you anything about the sounds or eng file. I'm sure new eng file 'technology' is being retrofitted to old locos.

Don't want to start another flamer but I thought the idea was to create more and better quality routes with CD releases.

I've heard it said more than once 'Loco's, we have enough already'.

Edited to remove a comment which was made from memory and therefore better deleted in the current climate :-? Plus bad grammar :D

Martin,

Sadly no it cannot and thats where you have to place your faith and trust, if you were a betting man you'd wait until others vent there thoughts and then collate your own opinion.

Eng files, yes that would be a sound assesment, l've seen that done before, re-release a product but with new updated texturing and dynamics, quite common in plane sims, l've nothing against that as it enhances old and sometimes very popular stock with new findings.

If you have to "repay" for that upgrade then l'm not so happy but what a lot of plane teams do is make the upgrade free to existing customers which l think is only fair.

There has been an advancement in eng files, certainly l've noticed in my dabblings in diesels and coaches a nice improvement in physics and some steam engines really seem to be on the ball and do require skilled handling to get the best from them.

Eventually all that info will migrate through out and that results in a higher quality of items.

As l said before the above and NVR are not my biscuit but Donner pass has me seriously interested.

Back on topic l suppose the only way you are going to fully know whats in a package is via small video clips ?, even then that only covers sounds and not eng file dynamics, there appears no answer to that one other than faith and trust.

Best regards

Michael

The problem John is that routes take a lot of time and effort. However, as 3DTS found with the UK Branch Collection, packs of locos without a route to run on have limited appeal. Many people can't work the Activity Editor, so it's useful to have activities included in the pack, but without a route, you end up using the Kuju S&C (and guess which mug wrote the UK Branch activity pack). I personally wouldn't buy a pack of locos without a route, because I have a Trainset folder full of them already. Of course, the 70% mentioned above will still be running the Kuju Flying Scotsman, so I'm sure they will welcome this new add-on.

Martin

P.S. I wonder whether the CD will contain an advert for UKTrainsim.
