I want to shout from the rooftops that I love 43s, but announcing it all the time here will have to be satisfactory. I don't fancy getting beaten up or stabbed for liking trains.

Better hide my locomotives book and pen when I walk through town next time!

no - you'll have to speak up!

Would a louder silence be any different? :D

Seriously, the media does seem to cause most of these problems, as well as many other of the world's problems (as mentioned earlier).

You'd get some odd looks just from enthusiasts for doing that as well :D 43s? aka Trams? I guess they're not that bad, better than plastic voyagers or certain DMUs etc... :)

A 47 on the other hand...

I'm into both buses and trains although its something I tend to keep to myself. Then again I tend to keep most stuff about myself pretty secret until people have got to know me as a person, as I think its improtant for people to know the sort of person I am rarther than going on stereotypes. I have found most of my friends to be similar aswell, including one person I's known for quite a few years and never realised they were a bus entusiast aswell until I saw them taking photos at a bus rally after we'd both told each other we couldn't meet up at the weekend because we were going to visit family :) . The problem is that as a young person you are seen as strange if your not a football fan, and even now I'm getitng older I still find it hard to "come out" about my interests to people, even though when I do most think its pretty "cool", even ifs not something they are interested in theselves. Sadly I think the problem comes down to sterotyping, and people take those that even we see as "sad" as being the norm. I've not got a girlfriend at the moment, and have always wondered if my interests would be a problem when it came to keeping one, but at the many railway and bus events I go to, including the 101 and c2c 312 farewell tours, I've seen people with girlfriends who not only seem happy enough to be their, but are taking an interest too, and not only that but travelling up to Manchester for the 101 tour I was sat near a man and his young daughter (probably about 5 or 6) who was writing down numbers in a notebook (with his help), which was pleasing as I feel that the more women who get into railways the more the stereotypes will be broken down. Overall though, I find the worst thing about being a young rail and bus enthusiast is that you not only get a bad reaction from "friends", and worse certain members of the transport industry, due to their stereotypical image of transport enthusiasts, but also from fellow, older, enthusiasts (mainly rail) and members of the transport industry due to their stereotypical impression of young people. It is also the case sadly that their are quite a few idiots who are rail enthusiasts, which has lead me on one occasion after being insulted about my hair by some enthusiasts on the end of a platform to shout "at least i'm not a sad . trainspotter", which was in many ways the truth. Thats not to say their are many nice rail entusiasts that I know, but many ask for the bad press they get (those who do stupid stuff to get good photos are another example, or those who have nearly got quite a few Diesel Galas cancelled que to bad behavior, its mostly "modern traction" types, again which helps to alienate us from the steam crowd"). On the other hand I find bus entusiasts a much nicer bunch, although their are exceptions sadly, but its noticable that "bus spotters" get much less bad publicity, although most of this is probably down to their relative rareness making them less well known (most bad attitude comes from the accociation with train spotters), but also that being fewer in number, those small proportion of idiots is quite insignificant.
God, I've gone on abit their :) . Sorry but this is one of the issues that really gets to me.

MSTS enthusiasm.........

Post by dogspike »

Like the guy in Bletchley, (where's that?), I'm of an age that allows me to be a tad eccentric, without the need to apologise to anyone. :D
All of my family are aware of the enjoyment I get from MSTS, and seem happy that it keeps me off the streets.
What I like are the looks I get when I tell people that I "got a new Spanish route last night"
My wife's 'cool' reply to that is:- "you should be so lucky"

People say that i'm wierd for liking trains. But i don't care.

What's that saying...anyone who hasn't been on a steam engine at speed hasn't lived. There's someting for you to say the next time someone takes the p**s.

If you think MSTS is a bit of a sad confession to make to friends, think what it's like for people like bravedan, baily9531 and me telling people you have a 12" to the foot model in the garage!

When you tell people that you own a bus, the instant reaction tends to revolve around Cliff Richard and 'Summer Holiday' - how I hate that film. The second reaction tends to be 'where do you keep it' and the third is 'can we go out in it'.

A lot depends on how you present it: either 'yes, I own a red double decker bus, ding ding' or 'yes, my hobby is vintage road transport engineering, I own a 1940 Leyland'; or on the other hand 'I play trains on my computer and I tweak eng files' as opposed to 'yes, I hone my computer programming skills by writing code for a rail-based 3-D simulator program'.

It's not what you say, it's the way you say it.

43s - HSTs. By far the BEST units ever designed.

Those are what I like. Scratch that, love.

Er, well, as you'll recall from when you saw it, it's more, ahem, rust than any particular colour.

And if you feel like becoming a museum piece, let me know and we'll see about getting you stuffed and mounted :o

i dont care bout real life trains. im fascinated by MSTS. thats all too it. I dont tell people becuz im 15, but thats reason enough. but thatnks to my slightly 'dark' appearance, thats a reason people stay away. they seem to think metal music is wrong, but hey! as for being stabbed, id just stick a knife in them. or set my two alsations on em. or my 3 cats. no one victimises me.

Oh, and please correct me if I'm wrong Paul, but the bell didn't work

As regards your final comment...providing I'm stuffed with six pints of Timmy Taylors finest together with a Chicken Jalferezi, and then mounted on Jcensoredn, then please go ahead and arrange
Cheers
