Hi all,
What about doing some film trains... trains that were in films...
I know some have been done, i.e Lion and 1401, but how about some fictionals ones...
The Goldeneye class 20,
The Back to the Future train... there must be thousands more...
Which can you think of?

General was the General and Texas (superb Buster Keaton silent film)
Black 5 44781 was disguised as a tank engine for the Virginia soldiers (it was then cut up on site after filming
)
Flying Scotsman appeared in a silent film in the 1920's about a robbery attempt on the Flying Scotsman (1 scene I have seen is when the bandit pulls a cord to sidconnect the engine from the train, Gresley was not happy at this
).

Before the NRM got it, their M7 was used in 'Oh What a Lovely War'. It was painted light green and lining applied on one side only, and had a diesel shunter at the other end of the train supplying the power. Filmed in Brighton station.
Not a locomotive, but I remember seeing Crumlin viaduct in an old action film. It was supposed to be crossing a wide river or something, somewhere exotic, but you could catch glimpses of Welsh miners cottages in some shots. The hero was dangling from the bridge being menaced by helicopters, I think.
Narrow gauge industrial locomotives at Amberley Chalk Pits museum were used in a James Bond (Roger Moore) film.
TV thriller, 'Edge of Darkness', had an 08 pretending to be a 31 in the opening credits.

In "Train of Events" they had:
A rebuilt "Royal Scot" (I think it was 46162)
A 'Black Five" no. 45337
A 'Jinty', still with "LMS" on the tank
and very briefly in one scene, an air-smoothed 'Spam Can'

It was indeed called The Train... And an excellent film to boot!crasher wrote:Burt Lancaster can't think what that was called, may be The Train ?
How about some of the American films, like Silver Streak, and Runaway Train?
Best of all, can we have someone do St Trinnians station and all the locos, stock and carts that rush through the station in the finale of The Great St Trinnians Train Robbery please?
There were a few shots of locos in Dad's Army too. Pike breaks the brake wheel off in one episode whilst they're shunting a train, and in another htey all parade next to a water trough as a train shoots past... Was that a Southern region BoB or Merchant Nave class?
The episode of Dad's Army you refer to is "The Royal Train". Mainwaring and the platoon are providing a guard of honour at the station. A train turns up, which the Capt. is convinced is the Royal Train, but is actually the Snettlefold stopping train. The crew disembark and phone the shed complaining of a faulty steam brake wheel (with a round hole in place of a square hole). The platoon have to move the train after the driver and fireman unintentionally swallow some of Mrs. Mainwarings' sleeping tablets thinking they are Sachhrine(sic). The train departs without the brake wheel, so Hodges, the vicar, the verger, and the mayor give chase on a jigger. At one point Pike, who knows how to drive a steam train, sets the reverser to full back and Hodges et al flee before the reversing train. The station-master and the porter turn the pointsand the jigger and train roll to a stop in the siding. The Royal Train is now only moments away. Mainwaring, his men, Hodges, the vicar, the verger and the mayor all stand by the line and salute. Mainwaring, as usual, ignores Pike when he tries to warn him about the water trough (something they had at Weymouth Station, but NOT on the real Southern Railway.). The royal train rushes past (hauled by an A4 with a visible BR Numberplate on the smokebox) and drops its' water scoop, drenching all and sundry.

Not forgetting that altough the footage showed an A4 in BR Days by the coast, the engine that ran past the home guard was probably the same engine that pulled the stopper.NZBigDave wrote:The royal train rushes past (hauled by an A4 with a visible BR Numberplate on the smokebox) and drops its' water scoop, drenching all and sundry.
