New computer and new fps (beware it will cost you :-)
Hi there group, ahh a new computer, the old one struggeled.
Now I don't know what kind of system Microsoft tested MSTS on but
the sim can even get my new system to do a little thinking.
Spec.
ASUS SK8N (motherboard)
AMD 64 FX-51
1 GB RAM dual channel (ECC)
Winfast G-Force FX 5950
Western digital 36 GB Raptor 10000rpm
onboard sound
and all the usual stuff, USB ports to your harts content firewire ect ect..
I can now run MSTS in all resolutions but I stick with 1024x768x32
Graphics set at maximum. I usually get 50-60 fps but I can be brought
down to 20-30 with a lot of rolling stock ect...
So there is no doubt that there is some baaaaaaad program code
in MSTS just like MSFS 2000. We can only hope that MSTS 2 will run a little better.
It's a joy to play the sim with my new computer, so if you complain about fps, here is your solution. Now I'm holding my breath for the release of WinXp-64.

I just got a new machine too.
Athlon64 3000+
1Gb RAM
Radeon 9800XT 256Mb
2 x 120Gb SATA 7200rpm drives configured with Stripe Raid.
The combination of the processor and the graphics card give me frame rates in the mid 20s on the SVR where I was getting down to 1 or 2 on my old machine (Athlon 2000+, GeForce3 500Ti, ATA HD).
Still get a bit of stutter at tile-swapping time but nowhere near as noticeable as on the old machine.

The Raptor
Hi there, the Raptor is SATA. A bit wee on the GB but I'm of to buy another one just like it. I'm not shure I'm go'na set it up in RAID I think it a waste of HD space. I got no stutter swapfile jinks. No I'm thinkin' in due time to buy another GB of RAM. Now does anybody here know if it is possible to make a RAM drive, with a desent program, Win XP can not
make RAM drives bigger than 32MB, to place the swapfile and temp dirs
in the ramdrive, if I set the drive to, lets say 1GB. That should take care of any stutter, if it is possible.

Is there that much differnce with the Athlon 64bit?
I have the Athlon XP 2500+Barton 512kb cache and its fine. i though tha the 64bt wouldnt really make any difference, until windows xp 64bit edition comes out.
While you were mentioning frame rates i run mine in 1024x768x32 and full graphics including spectacluar lighting and it runs fine as anything. Even when there alot of stock. i havnt yet overclocked my pc, so its only running at 333MHz FSB, but when i do, and get it up to 400MHz FSB, im sure it wil be faster.
To me at the moment the Athlon 64bit is just an overpriced CPU. I think that buying a new CPU when they first come out is pointless, at they are at their highest price and make building a pc very very expesive as you are paying out, what is it about £300 for the CPU. Mine onyl cost me £60 and from what you are saying it doesnt really seem much different

Hi there well the fastets P4 3,something EE can compete with the AMD 64
but not with the AMD-FX 51. It's actually an AMD Opteron only in 64 bit.
The fps is when I run SVR and Protrain3. Now these 64 bit cpu's are only showing their fangs in Win XP, the full set teeth will come out once WinXp64 arrives. Shure it's expencive but hey I had the doe, and I won't have to upgrade, atleast for 2 month
oh and we all have to upgrade
to 64 bit, once the OS arrives that's for shure. With 64 bit you can run
32 and 64 bit programs, just the same, BUT with an AMD Athlon or P4's
you can't run 64 bit program. FSB is not an 64 bit concern so there I can't give any specs.

I have just built a new PC solely to try and improve framerates & reduce stuttering. I have an Intel P4 2.4c processor, on an MSI 865 Neo2 motherboard with HyperThreading & PAT enabled, & 800FSB. I have an ATI 9800XT graphics card with full antialiasing & anisotropic filtering and dynamic overclocking turned on. All MSTS settings are turned up to Full.
I run a “stripped-downâ€

Unless code (including the operating system) is written to use a 64 bit processor, having one doesn't really offer all that much advantage - but it does mean you're ready for it when it comes.
I don't know if Longhorn (the next windows) will be a 64 bit operating system, if it isn't, then i'm sure what ever comes after it will be.
Faster disks on SATA and fast ram are absolutely the key bits that you can do the best in improving on any system to remove stutters during tile loading.
Matt.
