Would be great to see this engine out.
Regards
Matthew

That means mine has arrived in the post. But I don't get home until 6:30 pm .!
I though that the NRM didn't want it to steam because it has the last autherntic BR paint job on it.
I am still waiting for Pete Waterman to get on at get 70000 Britannia working again.
(Then again I am still saving to get my 3 1/2'' Britannia working so maybe he is having the same problesm....)

No the NRM was all for it last time, its just Bressingham wanted something like Green Arrow to replace Ollie so there was no chance of getting him out.BR7MT wrote:I though that the NRM didn't want it to steam because it has the last autherntic BR paint job on it.![]()

hi guys
this was a press release by the GCR Railway Loughborough Today on the release of the Steam Railway Magazine
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
70013 "Oliver Cromwell to be restored at GCR in unique partnership
agreement
BACKGROUND
In 1968 the last steam special ran on the national network. It was
intended to use 70000 "Britannia" on that working and then place it
in the care of the national collection. In the event the engine was
replaced by 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" of the same class which was in
better condition.
After hauling the "Fifteen Guinea Special" 70013 ran light engine to
East Anglia to go on display at Bressingham Gardens.
Some ten years ago an attempt was made to extricate the engine from
Bressingham and restore it to main line use but this failed in a
spectacular manner for a variety of reasons.
70013 remains in the care of Bressingham and is largely forgotten by
the current preservation scene.
In 1970 the early issues of "Main Line" magazine talked of possible
main line locomotives to operate on the fledgling GCR, and one of
these was 70000 "Britannia" which was purchased by a group of
enthusiasts for just that purpose. This, also, never happened.
A NEW STRATEGY
After many months of negotiations a plan to bring 70013 back to life
has now been agreed between all parties, i.e. NRM, GCR, Loughborough
Standard Locomotive Group, 5305 Locomotive Association and the
Bressingham Trustees, with "Steam Railway" magazine launching a
funding appeal.
The locomotive will move to York and star in the "Railfest"
activities at the end of May.
It will then move to the Great Central Railway for overhaul to main
line standards after which it will spend four months each year for a
number of years operating on GCR metals. The rest of the time will be
working on the national network as required by the NRM and on display
at York.
It will also appear at Bressingham although they have accepted that
substitute locomotives from the national collection will be
acceptable on most occasions.
THE OVERHAUL
The work will be done by members of the Loughborough Standard
loccomotive Group and 5305 Locomotive Association under the direction
of the GCR Locomotive Engineer with the project managed by the GCR
Project Manager and his team in the same way that 63601 was returned
to steam.
The work will be to main line standards using best practice
acceptable to the museum (including photographic records) and,
subject to major problems being discovered, must be completed within
two and a half years of the engine's arrival at GCR.
FUNDING
An appeal will be launched by "Steam Railway" magazine in its next
issue published on 29th January 2004 with benefits provided in a
similar manner to the O4 appeal with the addition of some benefits
from the National Railway museum. Bankers will be Friends of the NRM
as before.
Other sources of funding will be sought as needed and it is hoped
that Main Line Steam Trust will assist.
Additionally it is proposed to hold a special gala weekend on GCR
with the locomotive on display before work begins and also to offer a
special kind of photographic charter with 70013 and (say) 45305 to
hark back to August 1968.
GCR Chairman John East said: " I am particularly grateful to Andrew
Scott and the NRM for giving us the opportunity to be involved in
this nationally important project, to members of the Loughborough
Standard Locomotive Group and 5303 Locomotive Association for
agreeing to undertake the work, to David Howdle who has agreed to
chair the Project Management Team and the Trustees of Bressingham
Gardens for their imaginative approach to the proposal.
I am sure that all parties are grateful for the support of "Steam
Railway" magazine for their promotion of the funding appeal. Without
the necessary funding, we are not going to achieve our aims.
We will succeed and in less than three years we shall see this
important locomotive back in service both on the GCR and other
railways."

I guess most of those interested would get Steam Railway anyway - but for those who haven't there are some nice
incentives (prints, bits of old boiler tube, cab ride, tickets for NRM and GCR etc.) offered to encourage donations above £20. These can be sent to:
Lynn Best,
Steam Railway,
Emap Active Limited,
Bretton Court,
Peterborough,
PE3 8DZ.
cheques made payable to "FNRM (70013 Fund)".
PS. I have NO affiliation with any organisation involved, but would love to see a Britannia steam on the mainline again
