Train Consists seen around Lincoln
Can anyone enlighten me, as to what trains can be seen around the Lincoln area.
I wish to set up some modern scene activities for my MIDeast route... I understand that Central and ATN operate through Lincoln... but what freight trains pass by these days? Out of all the collieries and power stations that are on the current MIDeast route, which ones are currently still operational?

Hi
I'm not really into the modern railway..but I have to stop at crossings in the Lincoln district....recent sightings include 66s on EWS hoppers.
60s on EWS hoppers and tankers. 56s on Hoppers
Hope this helps.
I should add these are nearly all on the Newark...Barnetby line.
So I would imagine they start /finish at Immingham area....start/finish in the midlands...although in th 1970s the Tankers used to run all the way to Fawley(Southampton)....not much uses the Doncaster-Whitemoor route these days..shame

Welcome to Lincolnshire! Good summary of our freight flows - hope you don't mind if I add a bitjbilton wrote:I'm not really into the modern railway..but I have to stop at crossings in the Lincoln district
Both EWS and FHH run through Lincoln regularly - 66s on coal (occasionally 56s on the older MGR stock) and 60s or 66s on tankers - as below. Not all is Newark - Barnetby though - both companies have coal traffic from Immingham - West Burton / Worksop etc., arriving off the Barnetby line then taking the 'Joint' to Gainsboro'. Everything off the Barnetby line is from Immingham, and most traffic heading for Newark is for the Midlands. Some does go further south though - not sure about Fawley any more.
Some trains are still booked to use the 'Joint' rather than the ECML (i.e. Gainsboro' - Sleaford line through Lincoln) but there aren't many. All sorts of traction, from both companies. Not many will use the 'Joint' south of Spalding to Whitemoor though - closed in the 1980s
Power stations? High Marnham has just been 'mothballed', but Cottam and West Burton are still burning plenty of coal - a lot (not sure how much) of which is imported through Immingham - passing through Lincoln as in first paragraph. Not sure how much coal comes out of the North Notts coalfield - that's too far away
Hope this is helpful - any more info required (especially passenger traffic), let me know - I'll see what I can do! By the way, look at a rail atlas if possible and spot the obvious fault with routing Immingham - Worksop trains via Lincoln...[/quote]

Can't remember if Conoco still send Petroleum Coke to RTZ in Nth Wales (Rio Tinto Zinc)for alluminium smelting. And if you want to go back a few more years Anhydrous Ammonia and Sulphuric Acid to ACC fertilizers at Barton upon Humber(at its height upwards of 9 a week)not bad for a sleepy single line Branch! These sometimes used to be routed through Lincoln. And the huge amount of class31 and 37 that were sent to Peterborough every weekend for ECML engineering works(during the electrification period)in multiples up to 5 in tandem had to be seen to be believed.Alas all but memorys now

Thanks to our resident Nth Lincs signalman too! Don't think anything goes to N Wales any more - hopefully wrong though!
Talking of diversions - August Bank Holiday a couple of years ago saw HSTs and 47s on Mk4 sets, diverted from Newark to Doncaster, via Boultham Curve (not passing through Lincoln station). A bit of imagination could see these diverted from Werrington Jn. instead...
Anything that CT owns can, and does, turn up in Lincoln - except 323s for obvious reasons
. ATN also uses its 150s, and I'm sure I've seen 144s before. TransPennine 158s have been known to turn up on an ATN local too - travel in style
Hoping for Immingham and Barnetby - plenty more freight there taking the 'Yorkshire'! Lincoln's dead in comparison

I'll second that TomNick
It would be nice to see all that track work up to Immingham Docks and beyond,The Coal Handling Plant, the Iron Ore Terminal with its triangle to turn the trains,SImon Storage, next to Immingham west jcn s/box and the Killingholme Branch wich ends at the steel storage sidings lots of big propelling movements down there.Reception sidings and the permissive line to Immmingham East Jcn and Immingham TMD,Then on to Grimsby West marsh its endless

And Cleethorpes, of course! North East Lincs wouldn't be complete without it! Plenty of beach to model, and don't forget the sewage outlets and the long walk down the sea (and that's at high tide
) Only joking, of course - it's a really nice town if you're prepared to walk a bit from the station
. Finally the chance to run the 06:12 Cleethorpes - London KX HST (1A12 was it?)
Think of the possibilities at the Scunthorpe end - huge network in the steelworks, plenty of shunting and running round, and the Light Railway up to Dragonby, Roxby and Flixborough too
Time to leave dream mode...
Hope no-one from Cleethorpes was offended, by the way! More than a few good friends are from Cleethorpes - nearly all tell me it's not that bad!

It was either 1A12 or 1A02,seen it run in the 70's with class 47,55 and of course into the 80's with the old flying bannana (HST)
,often used to turn the HST at Ulceby around the triangle Habrough jcn,Brocklesby jcn,Ulceby jcn then back to Habrough to Cleethorpes, this was to get the first class at the right end so passengers didn't have to walk too far at Kings X

Lazy sods! Doesn't that mean Cleethorpes passengers have to walk further though? Not that there are many from Cleethorpes...
Though an HST beats whichever Sprinter works the 05:51 Cleethorpes - Newark N'gate nowadays (poor replacement), I'd like to have seen it in the 47/55 days! Maybe will one day...
