Thanks gang, thats sorted out two mysteries at once, my next queston was going to be about the front body doors on 37s etc!

I don't think that I would even like to walk through a 37 at idling speed never mind a screaming HST. :D

I am not too sure on the idea of a built-in loo. :-?

Imagine a toilet in the engine compartment though. :)

Is the driver supposed to stop the train whenever he wants to use it, or does someone take over while the HST is going at full tilt? I can imagine the poor . using the toilet really . himself because of the intense noise, heat and vibrations. :lol:

LOL! They definitely are dark and cramped. On a cold dark night with a dim torch I'd certainly be pretty scared walking through... And I've only been in a Hymek engine room, which is pretty small compared to some.

You have to wear ear protection if you walk through when the engine is running {ie idling}
No ear defenders issued in my day,which is probably why i have tinnitus now.

Sue the BRB! Thats what several of our drivers are doing, citing the Class 31 as being particularly noisy.

Class 86's used to have a urinal in the "engine" room (removed to make space for the TDM box)!

I suffer from tinnitus and it's bloody annoying but I've learned to ignore it apart from when it's very quiet and if someone mentions it :wink:

Of course it's a well known medical fact that it's caused by having an alert brain and being highly intelligent :D

I've been in the engine compartments of quite a few locos and all were pretty cramped and dark. Never done it when the engine was running though. I've seen drivers walk through the engine compartment with the engine idleing with no ear protection quite regularly, usually when taking over a stabled loco after releasing the handbrake in the rear cab. I doubt the noise levels are that bad if just walking through. For various reasons though people do have to travel in the engine compartment whilst the train is moving, either to repare a fault or to monitor a problem which I doubt is very nice even with ear protection. I remember reading in a book though that due to problems with the steam heat boilers towards the end of their use, fitters regularly had to travel onboard deltics to monitor and adjust the boilers. As most of the final steam heat trains on the ECML were at night (sleepers etc) they often spent hours in the cold and dark between two screaming deltic engines. Now thats a job I doubt many would offer to take.

More than once I've stood in the engine compartment holding open the fuel rack to get an old wreck of a 25 home.

When guards travelled in the back cab the drivers loved to open up when we walked thru.

A few years ago (when I was a bit smaller) I was helping with (well, watching) some shunting at Weybourne on the NNR, using the 27 - I can remember well walking through the engine compartment quite a few times. Not too noisy (that was with the engine idling) but I wouldn't want to spend too long there.
