So, big thanks to Andy Dunnet and co for an early Xmas pressie :)

well doesnt look like people are really going for it, as there seem to be 2 views. 1] from people who want silly awards about themselves, and 2]All the modellers think they should be getting praise constantly rather than just once in a while

Well im happy to vote for people in the categories lucazone suggested if some mechanism is set up for doing so, I think it just needs involvement from the moderators. This reminds me a bit of the stars system matt wanted to set up on the uktrainsim site (in the FAQs i believe)
I wish I could think of something interesting to put here...

Probably the "star" system originally muted by Matt was not followed through as he (wisely, as it now appears) was concerned about repercussions and petty bickering that such a scheme could generate...
Although I for one fully appreciate (and I GUENUINELY mean that) kind words either on the forums or by PM's end e-mails as a response to my work, I do not EXPECT these as a matter of routine... I actually enjoy route building, :o and on that basis, like to share my efforts with the community... I certainly don't submit these items with the sole purpose of ego-tripping on any resulting praise!
On the other hand, however, Although I am always willing to accept constructive criticism, I would certainly get really peed off with any nit-picking and arsey comments from any 'rivet counters' who hadn't contributed anything themselves to 'share'....
I don't mean to be too controversial here.. just making a point.
Regards,
Terry

well if this idea is to be taken forward, it certainly wouldnt be anything in the form of posting ur submissions in the forum. 10 of polls is not going to work.

I was thinking more of a tick box word file u fill out and send back. Something like, put ur top 3 entires for each catagory. Nothing forum based.

You misrepresent what I say in a manner that puts a completely different spin on the comment, something I am not too pleased about.

I said
If you download something and like it, for God's sake say so on the forum there and then. Don't wait for someone to start up awards or anything. People are far to quick to launch into ridiculous nit-picking criticism whilst the majority of downloaders just download and never say that they appreciate the model. There is nothing that puts people off uploading stuff than arsy comments usually made by people with no knowledge of what they are talking about, or how to do modelling in MSTS......
.....It's a nice thought to have an award thread but for most modellers some form of recognition at the time of uploading is better.
1) At no point did I say all the modellers think they should be getting praise constantly. If you look I say that people if they appreciate a model should say so at the time of uploading. Completely different emphasis.
2) You gloss over the comment I make that far too many use these boards to make nit picking criticism without first finding out if there is a genuine reason for a "problem". Presumably your silence means you agree, or am I spinning your silence to suit my own ends?
3) Why should expecting some manners be sneered at? Like Terry I don't do this to go on an ego trip as you implied. I enjoy painting models and working with talented modellers like Andy Dunnett and Dave Babb, and I always try to do the best possible job within the constraints of the tools to hand - and I research the colour schemes I do to the n'th degree, and the sound files I modify to get as close as possible to the real sounds. I actually tend to do models I would like to run myself - I'm lucky I've managed to find others who can build models with the same interests. That's why I do what I do. But what hacks me off totally is the whiney, self righteous attitude of some - and a substantial "some" it is too - who seem to think they have a right to expect perfect freeware, to be able to do what they want to any uploads, to demand in most a juvenile and petulant manner models that they personally want done but can't be bothered to get off their fat behinds to do something about it, and slag off older models without thinking that yes it's not up to current detail levels because it's an early model, not because it's ".".

The reason I would like the majority of downloaders who appreciate the works done - even if there are faults, or it's not to their personal taste - to say so publicly is to teach the selfish moronic boorish "I want" types a lesson in manners. An "awards" system is adversarial and will give the trolls masses of flamebait to play with. Regular, genuine and considered comments, appreciation etc will piss off the trolls to the point they just give up.

People will only say "thank you" or "well done" if they actually appreciate the model. I and no-one else is demanding complete obsequiousness that every model should compulsorily be met with a Stalinist massed celebration. What I said was that any appreciation should be shown in public - after all if you can log in to download an item, you can log in to say "Nice job" or "Good model - but why is x like it is?"

Have you considered a career as a spin doctor?

easy! i didnt mean my comment to be that deep either.

I was just saying the impression i got was that modellers are saying they would prefer to just have small thank yous and well dones rather than wait all year and have a little award thing like this. Which is quite fair.

But id also say, as u dont sem tob e getting appreciated as much anymore, At least this award idea is some way of some tahnkyou, rather than nothing.....

:)

Why not just make them the class 165/166 2003 skinning awards open to all class 165/166 skinned models released during 2003?

Ok, I'm happy with that.

Can I suggest a category ?

Best model converted from a 465 into a 165 ?

Thank you Robin, I accept the honour with gratitude.

I would like to thank Bristol, Eastern Coach Works and the Rushden Omnibus Preservation Society for making this all possible :D

It is also my honour to present the 'I'm going to keep going until I've built everything that came out of Swindom Works' Trophy to Robin of Northampton

This thread is a bit disappointing, I fully expected World War 3 to have kicked off by now :)

im not looking for or expecting an award for any activities I post, but I do appreciate, and expect to see, more feedback. As a newcomer to this and still in my first year of activity writing - and mostly just for one route at that - I dont know if what im doing is rubbish or particularly well done. I take comfort from the numbers of downloads but really that is meaningless since people will download something for nothing to try it and chuck it if its no good.

So far out of almost 1000 downloads just 3 people have taken the trouble to spend a minute or less putting a comment here or sending me an e mail. For them I am eternally grateful, for how else can i learn how to do it right / better unless someone gives me a clue. I actually would like to see a poll that downloaders must take on their last download before they can download another. A simple "did you like it yes/no" would be enough. If i got 997 no's that would tell me something really constructive and i could strive to improve or give it up.

No award for me - but some feedback yes please
