Older Steam Days:-

Highland Railway "Castle" Class 4-6-0s inc No 140 Taymouth Castle

"Snaigow" Class 4-4-0 (later LMS 3P) def on Wick-Inverness from 1916 to 1936 (All two of them!!!!)

Drummond "Barney" class 0-6-0 (LMS 3F) 1900-?

Drummond 0-6-4T's (15300 being one at Inverness)

Also other info:-

Cowans Sheldon 15 Ton crane pictured at Wick Aug 59, 44991 nearby (Inverness loco)

Inverness was a big Roundhouse shed.....I have a panoramic pic with loads of B5's and a few whisker fronted green DMU's and numerous 16T minerals, not much else.

With regard "other" BR era steam on Wick-Inverness...........not my area, but struggling to find anything other than B5's in the lists............

Ayr-Stranraer had a much wider type allocation, including Crabs.............

Locos in the 50s
Black 5s
Calley Drumond and Pickersgill 4-4-0
LMS 2P rarely.
3F "Big Jumbos" 0-6-0
The 2F Jumbos were not much use for the loads and grades

Wick had a 3F Stanier 2-6-2T for runs to Thurso

Tank locos did not have the coal capacity for the full line but calley 0-6-0T and 0-4-4T would venture as far as Dingwall.
Various LNER 4-4-0, 2-6-0 and B1s were tried at times but never stayed.

It was rare for anything other than an Inverness loco to travel the whole route.
In such an isolated area drivers would only take locos they knew and trusted.

OK, so I initially could not find "Wick" shed listed at all...presumed therefore it was a sub-shed by then...........BUT NO, it was 60D.

For 3F 2-6-2T read 3MT  , and from Jan '57 40150 was allocated to Wick..........I can find no allocation for this class for the seven years previous to this date .........

While you say 2P's Ian, and I would have expected them to feature too, I cannot find local allocations in the lists between 1950 - 1960 as yet.........

Ayr had 2P's, as did Dumfries, Ardrossen, Stranraer, Keith...can't so far find an allocation to Inverness, and Wick shed and yard was tiny, probably filled by 40150..

SO...........what sheds supplied locos for the line??? Inverness pretty obviously, but the lists are not easy to follow, and so far have not turned up much...............

I understand what you say Ian re: locos used.........given the number range for the classes thought to be "locals", I can probably find allocations easier............but for example don't know what number sequence "Big Jumbo's" were, and don't have the time to search and find................

IF this info is wanted that is.............................. :-?
