Who's gonna miss the Class 87's then?

Post by XPTE »

Well, the Class 87's will soon be gone. And will you miss them?

I haven't really travelled on them much to be honest. Though I wish I had. Have travelled on them from Liverpool Street-Harwich a few times back in the 90's, and then have made a number of short journeys on them from from Birmingham New Street-Birmingham International a number of times. And they've all delivered a superb ride.

I'll have to plan a journey very soon to travel on them before they get taken out of service.

Be sad to see them go. :(

Anglia run 86's not 87's, they also have a Freightliner class 90 as well.

I will miss the 87's out of Euston as I quite like loco hauled services. 86's will be missed when they go out of service as they have that distinctive sound.

I will, they are my favourite class of train. I haven't travelled on them that much, and I'd also like too while I still can. I'll miss the whole Virgin West Coast Loco Hauled sets, but particularly this class.

P.S. It's Class 86's that run the Harwich services- 87's very rarely left the WCML.

We do not have a Freightliner class 90, we have got a RES, RfD, & 3 EWS 90's tho!

Guess I used them a few times back in the early 90's when I went to the Netherlands a couple of times...but I think I slept through most of the journeys on this side of the channel. The last time nodding off listening to Pet Shop Boys Actually album on my walkman iirc lol. ;)

I put more of my energy into being wide awake for the rail journey from the Hoek van Holland/Rotterdam to Amsterdam than some loco hauled service here. ;) Mind you...dunno about today but the Dutch trains 10 years ago were pants. What is (was?) the continental obsession with cheap and nasty leather or plastic vinyl seats that you got stuck to when it was even slightly humid... *mutter*

Ok a Freightliner 86. I sure there was a grey loco with red somethings with Freightliner on the side.

Oh ye, it was Class 86's to Harwich and not 87's.

Just out of interest, what's the difference between the 86 and the 87's?

Nope all our 86's are in anglia livery, except one which is still in virgin!
We did used to have 3 Freightliner 90's but they went back in september!

87's are newer, faster, more powerful, they have two front windows instead of three. Also 87's were used almost exclusively for express passenger work on the WCML. 86's have led a more varied life.

Why are they removing the Class 87 then? Isn't it quite new? Maybe just a bit older than the 91?

What distinctive sound is that (he asks from 4,000 km away?)

If you record one for me, I'd love to try and make some MSTS sounds with it.

It is down to Virgin replacing all the old rolling stock with newer more advanced trains e.g Pendolinos. It is for the better I suppose but I am certainly going to miss the 87's & 90's. I am notching up as many journeys as I can behind the 87's before they go, but its getting harder now trying to dodge the Pendolinos.

I'm already missing the 86's terribly up here in the West Midlands, & I can't travel to Norwich or London to see them. Mind you I was lucky enough to see a double headed 86 Freightliner at Stafford 2 weeks back on a freight working.

oh btw the sounds that come from the 86's, 87's & 90's are all great.
