Midland Mainline's New Station Proposal (Plus More!)

Post by petermakosch »

I have two pieces of News.

1) I cant say yet, as its really confidential, but its exciting for me :)

2) A new Station has been proposed by MML for East Midlands Airport (I think) near Radcliffe Power Station. I saw it on the News at work, so i didnt really hear anything else.
More later after i see it on tonights news. Nothing on the MML website though.

Good for you :-?

The station has been proposed for a few years now. Certain MML and Central services have extended timings to take into account the "ghost" stops at the yet to be built station.

It has been put back so much because of the ash (or what ever) comming out the powerstation may fall on the cars in the car park and cause damage to the paintwork. Customers then demand paying for the damage.

Thats why its taken so long, and simply putting a roof over the car park is too simple. :-?

LOL, but they are buying it with Power Gen, and the big things are just water towers, so surely it wont matter that much?

I can say.
Now read carefully and slowly. Its not that good, and this is just a rumour, and the source cannot be traced, but. . .

Aparently, there is to be track work on the Midland Mainline, between Leicester and Sielby. Thw Midland Mainline Strech will be closed while the work is done. All new Track is to be laid, with a new continuious Freight line from Leicester to South Wigston. Possibilities might include a new Platform at Leicester for the Ivanho Train to Loughborough and extra flexability on train diversions. There's enough space, and it all seems to fit quite well, don't you think? This will also open up the frieght line that goes ver Safferon Lane and Alestone Road, not sure where it actually goes though. It would also mean the Frieght line going up to the Cement works up the line.
For people living in the area, you might have noticed that all the bushes and tree's have been cleared. Is this for easy access? or to be used as a storage place for big Track Vechles?

See, not that exceiting, but it is for me :)

PLEASE: DO not spread this around too much. I know i have put it here, but not everyone in the train world looks here.

Nice one 8) about time the did something about the track work on the MML, will be good to see more freight only lines too, and more flexibilty at Leicester, always seems to be a problem when I am there.

Not a power station expert, but isn't there a taller chimney that throws out all the smoke and other...bad stuff :) ?

Surely if the station is for the airport most people will travel there by train then onwards by bus?

Can't help you with the Leicester news - never been there! The goods line to South Wigston - i'm sure that'll just be replacing a line that was removed years ago (I can just remember the Down Slow from Brocklesby to Barnetby being replaced a few years ago - not sure I was that excited :D )

Power stations are incredibly efficient at burning the coal and therefore give out very little soot in the smoke, which is why the smoke is always white, not grey. Any soot that is in the flue gases is cleared out anyway before it is emmited. The vast majority of the waste is carbon dioxide and water vapor. I bet most domestic coal fires give out more soot than a power station. The large towers near to where the station will be are cooling towers anyway, and just give out water vapor.
Anyway, living in Loughbrough, less than 10 miles south of the new station, it concerns me that we will loose services when it opens, and even though we've been told every time this issue has come up, and probably will be again, that this will not happen, I have heard that said many times before only for it to happen anyway. If it reduces the major parking problem at Loughborough though it will be good news. It will be interesting to see what is in the local paper tommorow.
