I've never seen one, but by God were they needed yesterday down in Cardiff! The 1645 service to Pembroke Dock pulled in Cardiff, already half-full. Somewhere between 150 and 200 people tried to get on that service, and it was only a 2-car service! It was also the first time I'd ever heard the annoucer say the train was full, and said to wait for the 1700 FGW instead!

Besides, I thought 158s always operated in 2 or 4-car sets anyway...Didn't know they could run in 3-car formation. No excuse not to provide enough carriages then Wales and Borders!

CT 3-car 158's?
Never seen a set like that, they've ALWAYS been 2-car 158's if we're lucky up in Hereford.
Mind you, they don't treat us to a 170 very often either...I went on one from Newport to Cardiff the other day, and how nice it was. The only train not to be 100% covered in graffiti and owned by CT. Someone had started on the CT logo on the front end mind...

I got this when searching the internet on this webpage http://icrs.org.uk/inf_units.htm
New Central Trains Class 158 Formations May 21st 2003
Central trains have formed up 8 x 3-Car Class 158s this week formed as follows:
158951 52780 57780 57784
158952 52785 57785 52789
158953 52790 57790 52792
158954 52786 57786 52793
158955 52794 57794 57793
158956 52795 57795 52784
158957 52796 57796 57789
158958 52797 57797 57792
This effectively means 158780/785/786/790/794/795/796/797 are reformed and 158784/789/792/793 are disbanded.
This information is a bit outdated but they are still running like this to the best of my knowledge. I've witnessed quite a few of these at Wolverhampton myself in the last 6 months.
Hope this helps

I think he means 2 158's made into a 3 car, ie not a 159 idea. From the coach numbers post, sounds like we got the right idea
