Parkway?

Post by GatExp »

Did a search on this forum and didn't find an answer, so.......

Can anyone explain why so many stations have the apparently random word - PARKWAY - in their name.

It is something that has irritated me for years.

Thanks.

Because these stations were built on the location of a large car park, so people could park their cars there and travel. For instance, Tiverton Parkway and Bristol Parkway.

Well I never.

So the station is a relatively recent addition, i.e. long after the original line opened?

Obvious I suppose, but I'd never have thought of it.

Thanks XPTE.

yes, most within the last 15 years or so.

The idea of them is to relieve pressure on towns and cities by encouraging people to use the train I think - not that I need encoraging to take the train 8)

Wish they'd thought of a less annoying name though. Maybe it's a personal thing. (Pathetic. I know.)

Thanks.

LOL, I personally prefer Parkway to "Bristol-railway-station-situated-next-to-a-large-car-park-so-you-don't-have-to drive-into-town-to-get-the-train". Imagine the size of the tickets :D

If the tickets were that big they would perhaps seem better value for money.

I've no problem with the word 'Parkway'. They were always called 'Road', as in on the road to and nowhere near.

Not surpisingly people didn't use them as they wanted to go to a town and not to a road to a town.

So, a government back in the mid-1970's decided to increase car parking space and offer bus services to enable people to complete their journey.

Hence 'Parkway'.

Bodmin Road/Parkway was a prime example.

Beaulieu Road and Lyndhurst road.

What about pubs?

Portsmouth Arms and Berney Arms, have just a station and a pub next to it and thats it.
