Class 47's, 50's and.....DELTIC's to Paignton!!!!!!!!
Virgin are looking at running loco hauled trains next year on their Summer Saturday from Preston and Newcastle to Paignton, and the specification calls for locomotive haulage!! The four trainsets which will run for ten Saturdays from July to September must be fully crewed with drivers and train managers and have on-board travelling fitter for the locomotive. The latter requirement enables heritage locomotives such as Class 47s. 50s and 55s to be used.
Shall look forward to that then!

I remember hearing this a while ago, because the on-board fitter's job is much sought after

Er, no. The 37s and Ex-VT Mk2s are Valley Lines (now part of Trenau Arriva Cymru) duties, to cover for their DMU shortage. This will end when Scotrail hands back its 150s (displaced by T*s), which will go to TAC. Other ex-VT stock is owned by spot-hire companies like Riviera Trains.
My betting is on Riviera/West Coast Railway/Fragonset 47s with Riviera/WCR Mark 2s. I doubt Hoovers will be in on the act, although if a major Duff shortage suddenly occurs, and 37s are not able to take the load (if it requires 90mph timings), don't rule out anything involving 100mph ETS-capable locomotives. I thought Deltics were an odd one, unless you're putting a Duff or 37/4 on the back for ETS, as the 55s require modified Motor-Generator converters on the coaches (and these are few and far between nowadays). On tours it's not a problem as most sets have their own generator coach.

It'll be fragonset 47s, apparently. Severly doubt the 50s will be on it, mainly due to the fact that they aren't mainline certified at the moment, (no AWS/TPWS)
