Class 47's, 50's and.....DELTIC's to Paignton!!!!!!!!

Post by XPTE »

Virgin are looking at running loco hauled trains next year on their Summer Saturday from Preston and Newcastle to Paignton, and the specification calls for locomotive haulage!! The four trainsets which will run for ten Saturdays from July to September must be fully crewed with drivers and train managers and have on-board travelling fitter for the locomotive. The latter requirement enables heritage locomotives such as Class 47s. 50s and 55s to be used.

Shall look forward to that then!

Dammit, why can't they run them from Carlisle or Lancaster :(

Not too much longer to wait now.

This time in just over 3 months. Deltic's, 50's and 47's to Paignton. It will be super!

I remember hearing this a while ago, because the on-board fitter's job is much sought after 8)

What's the betting they come up with some kind of solution which involves side-stepping the usage of classic traction?

We'll have to wait a little over 3 months. My mistake. These trains will run from early-mid July up until September.

Also, I've just heard that Deltic's WON'T be running this year. :( What a shame as I was really looking forward to travelling on one of these for the first time.

Which just leaves the 47's and 50's then.

In previous summers there's been an XC service to Paington using a VWC set- including DVT- is this the same deal? Because if so I've got to go on it, or at least see it.

Does this have anything to do with the 37s running around Cardiff and Swansea last week with four Virgin Mk2 coaches (I think) each, or topping and tailing them, or is that something else?

Er, no. The 37s and Ex-VT Mk2s are Valley Lines (now part of Trenau Arriva Cymru) duties, to cover for their DMU shortage. This will end when Scotrail hands back its 150s (displaced by T*s), which will go to TAC. Other ex-VT stock is owned by spot-hire companies like Riviera Trains.

My betting is on Riviera/West Coast Railway/Fragonset 47s with Riviera/WCR Mark 2s. I doubt Hoovers will be in on the act, although if a major Duff shortage suddenly occurs, and 37s are not able to take the load (if it requires 90mph timings), don't rule out anything involving 100mph ETS-capable locomotives. I thought Deltics were an odd one, unless you're putting a Duff or 37/4 on the back for ETS, as the 55s require modified Motor-Generator converters on the coaches (and these are few and far between nowadays). On tours it's not a problem as most sets have their own generator coach.

It'll be fragonset 47s, apparently. Severly doubt the 50s will be on it, mainly due to the fact that they aren't mainline certified at the moment, (no AWS/TPWS)

1V15 Newcastle-Paignton
1V17 Preston-Paignton
1V19 Manchester-Paignton
1M94 Paignton-Preston
1M96 Paignton-Crewe...

...are all the trains due to be loco hauled, for just under 4 months.

Wasn't there also talk (I know this is rather less exciting!) of actually running the service with an HST? I'm guessing that the loco-haulage solution stems from a shortage of HSTs. I may be wrong, but I don't think any Deltics have TPWS yet.

Question, what about a class 45/1?
