91s are very reliable nowadays - in the last few years they have had just about a TOTAL refit (and a hearty congratulations to GNER for going right to the heart of the issue of reliability on the ECML), and are now all classified 91/1. Before that...!
They were only ever designed for working Mk4+DVT sets up and down the ECML though. Nothing else. 31 were built - no more will be. End of story.

Really what it all boiles down to is, us Brits hate change, i for one think that privatisation was the best thing (and only good thing) that came out of the Tory age.
If privatisation had not happened i think there would be far fewer new STATE OF THE ART trains, like the ultra reliable, and, remember this, straite out of the box class 66.
Freight as well as passenger services have had a much needed overhaul, new Locomotives, new DMU's and EMU's and more to follow as First North Western are ordering new 100MPH DMU's from Siemens for the Trans Pennine Franchise. Talking of Siemens, the design of the 332 and 333 are pretty radical but it workes.
I for one love the new fresh ideas that have happened over the past few years of the privatised railway, the class 66 may not look or even sound that great (although i do like them) but ill bet they will go on for a very long time.
Think of it this way we may well have had 142's on the West Highland Line or even 158's still on the Glasgow Central - Manchester Airport run.
To finish, i would like to think that we may eventualy get rid of the stigma of the "Victorian Railway" and build on something that we can all be proud of, like the men who toiled in the days of steam.
Change is good, no one at the time liked the blue era but it is now missed by a lot of people, as will the class 66 when it is past its sell by date, heck we may even morn the passing of the 142.
Time will tell.
