Wasn't GEC Alsthom formed by Alcatel Alsthom and and General Electric Company?
Then which companies were Bombardier made of?
Alsthom Atlantique/CGE-Fiat/Cagelec/Alcatel linked up to GEC(UK) in 1988.
In 1998 GEC Alsthom is floated and renamed Alstom (Alcatel retaining 24% share)
Alcatel Alsthom renamed Alcatel in the same year.
Bombardier Transportation - this well-established Canadian firm already had a substantial presence the UK by 2001, when after lengthy regulatory procedures it was authorized to buy out its rival Adtranz. The history of Adtranz is complex: the ailing Brel Limited was bought out by ABB, a consortium of Swedish ASEA and Swiss Brown Boveri. The railway interests of ABB were later formed into Adtranz, a joint venture with Daimler Benz of Germany. Not bad for a company started by Armand Bombardier in 1942 to build snow-buggies!
