Smoke works in explore mode but not in activity.

Post by Divot »

The route is Settle & Carlisle and the activity is an add on called 'Day out with Thomas'. The loco is Thomas The Tank Engine and the activity requires Gordon and Henry which are all working. Here is the problem.

The activity runs OK, but there is no smoke or steam from Thomas. Sounds are OK and the whistle is normal, but no steam when sounding. Also, no steam from the cylinder cocks when opened and engine moving. However, everything is normal when I use Thomas and his consist in explore mode on the route. Smoke and steam from everywhere expected. Gordon and Henry too, in explore mode. My 3 year old grandson wants smoke during his day out with Thomas activity.

I have triple checked the activity readme and have made all the required dls and mods to the eng file (tttank.eng). Conbuilder passes everything with no problems. Routeriter gives a thumbs-up to the activity and I have compared the engine files for Gordon, Henry, Thomas and the Scotsman engines. All normal. I have looked at the .act, .srv and other files, and I don't recognize anything in them that might control smoke visual effects.

What am I missing here?

Thanks,
Bob V

Same symptoms here too

Post by Dspring »

Sorry I have no solution, but I have exactly the same symptoms you describe. In an activity I have made for the Swansea South Wales route I have several AI steam trains and several static steam trains in the act, but none of the AI nor the player train have any visible smoke or steam.

My player loco is going forwards as are all the AI trains so it's not the No smoke in reverse problem.

Using the player train in Explore mode gives the steam and smoke as expected, and I am pretty sure that I have used the AI trains in other activities where they do smoke.

I have never been able to correct this. Did you come across the answer?

I think you're using old versions of the locos, if I remeber correctly, theres some new engines on UKTS that work fine. If you want me to write an activity for you with more Thomas locos to show your grandson just ask :).

Try removing some of the static consists from the activity. I would guess there are many.

It's all about frames per second....

If you have a high end computer then you should not see this problem. But if you have a slightly slower machine it will start to drop steam effects and signal lights eventually :(

solution is to remove static consists as mentioned ;) :D
