Internet crashing my pc

Post by TOMMO79 »

I keep getting this message when browsing, sometimes straight away or maybe after a few minutes. Following the message a window opens saying my pc will shutdown in 1 minute and i will lose all unsaved info. A following message says something about NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM & Remote procedure call? I'm on windows XP and my internet account is through freeserve hometime. I've tried a system restore but that didn't work. This has only started today and is going to cause me major problems uploading/downloading files.

Help appreciated

Don't worry your head Tommo

I got this from Micro$oft website..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevi ... 03-026.asp

Read that and all will become clear

Seems i'm ok, doesn't affect Millenium Edition... something is good about Windows ME!

That's an amazing coincidence. I had an email this morning from a fried who had the RPC shutdown problem - I'd never heard of it before, thanks Jamie for supplying the answer.

It's a virus and you have it I'm afraid. Only affects NT Win2000 and XP versions of the windows operating system. Check out this news:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/0 ... index.html

Install the patch from the microsoft site posted above and then install and/or update your antivirus and perform system scan to clear it off your computer.
Search for msblast.exe on your drive and in the registry the key;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Run "windows auto update" = msblast.exe

If you find it then you are infected too.

Amazing how quick they can make a patch when the virus attacks Microsoft.

Looking at the history of this particular worm,it would seem that the patch was released nearly a month ago 21st July,so anybody who kept up to date using the Windows update site should be OK.

Indeed the emergence of this worm in the past few days, looks suspiciously like a "reversed engineered" device to catch those not previously protected by that particular update, especially as the registry key links windows auto update to the msblast program.

Yep i got this the other day as well. After about 4 shut downs i tracked it down to be the msblast.exe thing, so traced everything on my system that it related to, and managed to clear it from my system.

Will still get the update patch to make sure ive cleared it all away though.

Strange thing is, I had exactly the same symptoms for the past 24 hours, but no trace of mblast or the Lovsan worm on my system. I dont know what it was, where it came from or where it is now. I have now been live on the net for the last 90 minutes. Previously with the RPC problem it was about 5 minutes.
