erm HELP!!!! (Pc Problem)

Post by ThomasTheTank »

having just checked the Handy little Event Viewer in Windows XP i have noticed that it says

The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

now i have seen that message for well over 5 months now any ideas on what i should do other than back up my data which i am already doing so?

Thanks

Daz

Yep, thats what it was designed for!

(assuming your current HD hasn't completely died by then!)

You don't need to get a proprietary program to copy your HDD contents. Most HDD manufacturers have free utility downloads available to do so.

Have you set up your HDD properly in your BIOS?If you can enable "SMART" capability, then you may get a better report of your "problem"

The program you need is called DataLifeGuard and is now up to version 10.

It replaces the old EZ-Disk utility which allows you to copy whole partitions of a disk. The new DLG utility can also check for problems with the drive and tell you if there is a solution.

You can find it in the downloads section of the suppour menu.

Can I also suggest you get a fan unit for the 120Gb disc. They are not expensive and easy to fit, otherwise the 120Gb discs can run a bit hot which is not good for them.

If you cant start windows even with only your old disk installed then it looks like the predicted faliure is upon you, most likely it's bad sectors appearing. As there would be no point ghosting an image of a disk with an os that doesn't run (you would just have 2 disks with the same problem) then the time has come to bite the bullet. Looks like you really need to install the new 120gb as master and connect the original as slave then re-install your os to the new disk. You could at least retrieve your data from the old disk after a successful install of windows to the new one by copying it across.
