A mystery bus picture and possible caption compertion

Post by johndibben »

I was going to put this in the bus forum but it might produce some humour here.

What is it?

It's a gas producer used (tried) during the war.

The satellite aerial must have come from a time machine!

Man at C & A on the right.

A friend of mine tried something equally silly a few years ago - using chicken manure. Total failure.

I presume the "satellite" dish thing to to some how be a visual indicator to the driver.

Looks a bit like a mirror. So that the driver can see something on the trailer from up front, a guage perhaps?

As for a caption:

"After numerous complaints about quantity of refreshments, the management try a radical solution - the TTURD or Towed Tea Urn Refillable Device. Specal pumps are to be installed at filling stations at convenient locations on long distance routes for re-fuelling."

Is that a second engine? It has two driveshafts going into it.

Manwaring: You stupid boy. Wilson go find that handle.

Not sure about the mirror idea, but a simple gauge sounds like a stronge possiblity. Presumably at short notice it wouldnt have been possible to put a fuel gauge linking to the driver, alot easier to mount it on the trailer itself at a height where the driver could look through his rear view mirror to see it.

I think you'll find the "dish\mirror?" is merely the stokehole lid for the charcoal. The same vertical firing arrangement is found in Sentinel steam lorries, and loco's.
