Hi Eric, have you installed the MSTS 1.4 Update as without this in your computer the Bin Patch will not work even though you think it is.

Hi Bob

In all the confusion this morning (my head is ringing and I still have some domestic chores to complete) I may have overlooked everything!!!!

As I set Dorset Coast V6 up as a mini-route, I may indeed have omitted the patch you refer to. Where may I find it quickly and remind me - what does it do?

Cheers

Hi Eric, Have a look in the Update which is in the link below :-
http://msts.steam4me.net/MSTS_Updates/index.html
Scroll down the page until you see where it tells you why you need to install it and so if you don't already have it, you must download and save the
first one, then run it and install the update to the location where your Mini-Route is installed.

Hi Bob and all who tried,

Yes indeed, now I see what you were referring to, I can assure all that the Train Update was already installed on this route. To make sure, I have repeated the installation and then reinstalled an MSTS Bin Patch.

Still no joy - no white text and no cab swap. So, enough is enough, I've wasted a day's work on this, so the prototype must now be shunted away and I'll revert to the original non-prototypical consist of a large engine with a nine car rake, moving at 4mph down the tramway on its way to Waterloo.

Cheers

Hi Eric,
Apologies for not replying earlier, but I've been out all this lovely day!!

If you have Dorset Coast set up as a mini route, when you apply the MSTS 1.4 update, you MUST change the location to which it unzips, otherwise it goes to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator. Note that it must point to the MSTS root folder.

Also, The Bin Patch will install into the location indicated by the MSTS Registry entry, so that, too, must be changed to point to your mini route installation's root folder.

Cheers,
Ged

EDIT : When applying the MSTS v1.4 update, make sure you're using the 7,204KB version and NOT the smaller one, which, I've found, MSTSBin doesn't always like!!

Hi Eric,

Have you got a green class 33 Diesel, they operated over the Quay Branch, they entered service around 1961,so you could still have steam loco's as AI trains, and when you get to Woking you can start using, Green 4 Subs and Nelson EMU's Class 4 Cor,4 Res or 4 Buff, usual formation 4 Corr,4 Res ,4 Cor, or 4Cor,4 Buf,

They were used on Waterloo-Woking-Guildford-Portsmouth Harbour, hence the name Nelson's,the 4 subs ran in 4 Car and 8 car sets on outer suburban services from Waterloo as far as Woking and Guildford, the line to Portsmouth was electrified in the 1930's

Hi Ged & Mike

Another day another dollar. I was so wishing to find I had installed the smaller Train Update file - but no, the 7,204 version was the one used. But I installed it again and then re-installed the Bin Patch, hoping it would make a difference. Nope! Still no white text or cab swap.

Oh Mike, and you a friend of so many years standing ----------- to suggest I use weasels as a player --------- I nearly fainted!!!!!

Cheers to you both - heads down now and let's do some work on Dorset Coast V6. It's another beautiful morning up here in North Wales, Wendy is still in bed, so I can make a sneaky start!

Good morning

Hi Eric,
Nope! Still no white text or cab swap.
In that case, mate, I'm sorry, but you must have done something wrong!! ..... unless .. you are using Vista, or a later OS, and have your mini route in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86).

I'm assuming that you get no error messages when installing the MSTSBin; "No white text" means that, simply, the Bin Patch is going to the wrong place!

Hi Ged

The mini-route is stand alone at C:\NEW MINI ROUTES\Dorset Coast\Train Simulator - the Bin Patch is directed to that destination folder and shows as being installed in that location. As is the Train Update install. I wouldn't have been able to uninstall if that wasn't the case. I agree, something is wrong - but what is it?

C:\NEW MINI ROUTES\Dorset Coast\Train Simulator contains no other routes. Everything from the original MSTS install is deleted - so no Europe, Japan or USA - and all stock and consists are deleted that have a 2002 dateline. The only stock that remain are the Default, the Scotsman and a couple of others.

Maybe I need to reinstall MSTS then copy in the dorset Coast route - start from Scratch?

Cheers

Hi Eric,
Well, you've got a strange problem, there :)

It certainly wouldn't be necessary to re-install Dorset Coast, as it's obviously working correctly.

Because, whenever I set up a new MSTS installation, I use a pre-existing default + update + bin patch installation and copy it, I've just started from a default-only setup and applied the update and bin patch in turn. I did this to prove that the bin patch could be applied to any specified folder (as long as it contains an updated train.exe). Everything worked correctly.

I don't like to say this, but as I'm completely out of ideas, I will! Are you certain that the installation you installed the Bin Patch into really is the same installation that you are running as a mini route?

After this, I'm sorry, but can't think of anything else to suggest.

Eric, is the train.exe file in your Dorset Coast mini-route the same size as that in you main MSTS installation?

Hi Ged and everyone else who tried to help me .......................

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!! WHOOPEE!!!!!!!

After spending the last few hours completely reinstalling Dorset Coast V6 into a brand new installation of MSTS - it works!!!! We have both white text and a cab swap!!!!!

All I did was employ exactly the same routine that I use for every new mini-route set-up. The new Dorset Coast is held in C:\Dorset Coast V6 Mini-Route\Train Simulator and I have just transferred from the Pannier Cab into the Battle of Britain cab! Wonderful feeling when a plan comes in.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions - it is good to know that even for an experienced campaigner like myself, there are always friends on these forums to give a hand when required.

Right, after tea, I will begin again to create a prototypical run from Weymouth Quay to Waterloo.

Cheers

Hi Eric,
I'm very pleased that you've got it all sorted, but I'm still puzzled as to the cause of the original problem.

Anyway, onwards and upwards :)

Hi Ged

Work this out if you can, because I'm puzzled by it.

When I had this new installation running for the first time, (with the Bin Patch installed), I created a simple test activity whereby I drove the Pannier along the Quay to couple to the BB. At this point there was no white text and I was unable to cab swap - as before!

So I came out of MSTS and opened the new installation to look at the Bin Patch. I decided to uninstall it!

I then went back to the test activity and lo & behold I had white text and a cab swap!!! How!!! But I've left it like that and everything works? Any idea why?

Cheers

HI Eric,
The only thing I can think of is that, somehow, the Bin Path didn't install correctly - more importantly, the updated Microsoft train.exe wasn't replaced by the MSTSBin version.

Following on from David's post regarding the size of train.exe, all versions from, and including, the 1.4 update, are 3997KB (4.091,953 bytes). The key differences are in their dates, which are shown below :

MSTS default v1.0 : 10/05/2001
MSTS default v1.2 : 11/12/2001
MSTS v1.4 update : 11/12/2001
MSTSBin 1.7.051922 : 19/05/2007
MSTSBin 1.7.102222 : 18/10/2007
MSTSBin 1.8.010516 : 01/05/2008
MSTSBin 1.8.052113 : 21/05/2008

If you've still got your old DC6 installation, the above might give a clue as to what happened.
