Things under platforms

Post by terryhfs »

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the things you see underneath platforms are ? They seem to be fixed to the 'wall' under the platform in the vertical aspect, and have something like a slider on them, or definitely something that can move up and down.

Is it perhaps to make sure the platform is the right height in relation to the line, or some other mysterious purpose ?

Thanks,

Terry...

They are markers used for tamping to make sure the ballast is at the correct height and there are others to denote the correct cant of the rail.

I thought those things were only put down in my area to see if the Thameslinks could fit in the platforms.

Still Semaphore signals in Polegate, Bexhill still has the fishtale distants, and in working order. Bexhill is also the only signal box I know in the South that has the 5-5-5 & 7-5-5 bell codes.
